LOL Brian. I suspect most of us know w.h.c.h likes to get things going. No harm in it.;) Just wish more people were outspoken on the N.Ireland section, instead of hiding away.

How about giving those houses that are say within half a mile of the incinerator free electricity?

That way they have to put up with it, but they are also benefiting from it?

    Cheers, Des.

Can't see the rip off that is NIE (or whoever will be providing the electricity from this plant) giving away anything for free!

The council actually consulted with the residents of Belfast on this. 90% said yes to the incinerator to be placed there. So the council decided in the end not to bother. This is sort of the opposite of 'not in my backyard'. Now we'll get big fines from the EU for our recycling percentage being too low, meaning higher rates.
If anyone can find the reason why the council decided against that would be nice for starters...

We'll get the fines anyway surely? Incineration is waste disposal, not recycling.

I'm sure that could be argued as I remember from A level Physics. Energy cannot be destroyed, only changed from one form to another so technically incineration could be classed as recycling as the "energy" stored in the waste is recycled to energy in the form of heat &/or electricity... I thinks it's more to do with the landfill issue anyway.

And to all... YES Humbel pie was eaten.. but as you say Pretani and bribrian, it's always nice to " poke with a stick now & again " just to see the response.... (I do admit I did jump the gun a bit at the start but it was just the attitude of that DUP councillor on the radio that got my goat a bit)

I know it will possibly effect some local residents to the proposed site but as suggested.. maybe they could be compensated in some way like discounted electricty or the likes....

    Thanks Pretani!

    A) why Belfast? - We've established that's where most waste comes from, what's the point in trasporting it out/making rural residents suffer?
    B) the stadium has become politically divisive, only in N.Ireland could it happen. - Can't argue with that. Just build the thing already.
    C) not a good idea to built an incinerator just to annoy the people in South Belfast. - It certainly isn't. But neither is it a good idea to do it in North Belfast, it'll annoy them too. It'll annoy anyone who lives near it, wherever it is. But it does look like it is necessary, and at least we get a bit of power out of our rubbish.
