might as well blame them for that as well.......
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!
  • I take it all back.... (Eating Humble Pie :o ) I hear they made a B*lls of the vote and probably have to re-take it (Apparently old Sammy didn't vote) and he said he would have voted for the "Recycling Plant" (apologies also to the DUP MASIVE...) I jumped the gun thinking old Sammy (With his outspoken Green Credentials) would also have thought waste was not a problem and we could just dump it in a hole and it would all go away!!;)

  • (Sorry I know this is a bit off the subject but Heard "BIG IAN" on the radio this morning (I think being interviewed at Westminster) and I thought he was sounding a bit worse for wear. OK I know he's as old as the Dinosaurs but you'd think he'd start taking things easy. I know it's hard for these Old School workaholics to turn off but I think he's played his part and time to hand the rains over to the next generation

What would be the incentive for doing something about waste then? Or the potential penalty for inactivity (apart from physically running out of landfill space)?

We can create our own penalties without having Strasburg involved.

Yes, sorry, 90% of people who replied to the consultation, but I take from the fact that everyone in Belfast was asked, that the ones who didn't reply don't count.
This is burning rubbish to get energy. Is that not smarter than burning coal to get energy?
The thing that gets me is ignoring an overwhelming citizen majority. Why consult in the first place? Instead they should have had the councillors vote 1st, they say no, then it goes no further. How much did the stillborn consultation cost?
Anyway, I think it would be a fair assumption to say that most of NI's waste comes from Belfast, so is that not a fair place to put an incinerator?

But think about it this way - the majority of people who replied won't have to live anywhere near it. So those who live right beside it effectively have no voice, since anybody else won't care if they have to suffer stinking burning rubbish 24/7.

Also, a lot of the waste doesn't even come from Belfast - All of Ballymena's rubbish ends up there too, plus I imagine several other town's rubbish does too.

I think technology has come on leaps & bounds from the days of literally burning the rubbish. All these new plants would have scrubbers and all sorts of modern technology to remove odours, carbon.. etc.. etc..etc... which would also fall under tight EU directives.
Also, a lot of the waste doesn't even come from Belfast - All of Ballymena's rubbish ends up there too, plus I imagine several other town's rubbish does too.

No-one will ever be happy and you'll always get the NIMBY arguement (I wouldn't care if it was 800 yards from my house) but it has to go somewhere and as pointed out... Belfast would be the biggest producer of rubbish as an area so it's only logical that the treatment plant be in or around Belfast

Wait a minute... where is there a BIG BIG Site laying empty with nothing to do with it ..

    YIP THE MAZE

Wouldn't it be great... A great big modern Incinerator/Recycling plant beside a modern Peace & Reconcilliation Centre!!

That's an important point and one that should be put to them. As far as I'm aware Sinn Fein, the SDLP, and the DUP were always against the use of incinerators as they are only a short term solution to the waste problem.
