Majority Say YES.. DUP Still Say NO.. Tax payer will suffer!!

So Belfast City Council has decided not to allow a waste incinerator to be built on land it owns at the north foreshore of Belfast Lough. £100,000 of tax payers money has been spent on a consultation inc questionaire to the people of Belfast inc people in the adjoining area. Vast majority of people didn't have a problem with the plans. Would power thousands of homes, provide jobs in construction & running it. and would save thousands if not hundreds of thousands in fines which will be levied on councils from 2013..

Did the vast majority of people on the shore road and surrounding area really not want this or is this all spin from the DUP??

When did Belfast city council become the DUP?
  • From what reports I've heard, it seems to be the DUP councillors saying NO!

I think people always think these things are a great idea - unless of course its being built near their house. House devaluation, smell, traffic to and from it, etc...

I know i wouldnt fancy having one built near me...

Can you provide links to that?
  • As far as I was aware, the DUP don't control the council. So there must be others as well who disagree. Just right too. I don't even live in Belfast, but I know I wouldn't want one within a hundred miles of me. When I remember the smell that used to come out of O'Kanes chicken place, I don't want to have to go through that again!

I was listening to a news report earlier and there were only about 6000-7000 replies to the consultation questionnaire out of about 130000 sent out.

It will be interesting to see if the O/P will come back and substantiate the wild claims they've made?

The council actually consulted with the residents of Belfast on this. 90% said yes to the incinerator to be placed there. So the council decided in the end not to bother. This is sort of the opposite of 'not in my backyard'. Now we'll get big fines from the EU for our recycling percentage being too low, meaning higher rates.
If anyone can find the reason why the council decided against that would be nice for starters...

90% of those who responded is different than 90% of the residents of Belfast.

With a very quick google, there are articles on the Belfast Telegraphs website. Heres one...

    http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/council-says-no-to-pound300m-plan-for-waste-incinerator-14332487.html

It also appears from that that Sinn Fein also 'werent comfortable' voting for it and that there were many environmental issues that all parties had concerns with.

Also a quick quote ""Incineration doesn't get rid of the waste, it just converts it into a toxic waste. There may be less of it but it is more difficult to deal with it."

Do we really want to be investing in a technology that increases our CO2 output? Hardly forward thinking is it?
