Listen, I don't live in Belfast so really couldn't give a monkeys... I'm just looking at it from the point of view of (As almillar says) from 2013 we will not be able to meet our recycling percentage as set by the EU so the councils will be fined BIG STYLE... and lets be clear... it'll be the rate payer picking up the bill!!
With regards to other sites... would it not be sensible to build the Incinerator close to the source of the maximum producer of the waste.. i.e Belfast?? Not much point in building it in the middle of nowhere and then have to transport all the waste to it... Haulage costs (Carbon Milage)
Oh and the council did give the go-ahead for a mechanical and biological treatment plant to be built on the site which I would imagine will still result in potentailly the same issues as an incinerator anyway if not more..0 -

NIMBY - Not In My Back Yard....
There are serious environment considerations around this, and it seems ALL parties had reservations.
Back to your headline post though, can you direct us to any evidence that the blocking of it was actually down to the DUP as you claim?0 -
Incineration is used by some of the more advanced EU countries as the main method of waste disposal (Denmark, Sweden etc.). Perhaps we should be following their lead now, rather than doing nothing for several years and leaving it until the huge EU fines commence in 4 or 5 years. http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/statistics/waste/kf/wrkf08.htm0

Making quite an assumption there!! when did I ever say that?? Already have a Dump in my Back yard.. Haven't you ever been to Lurgan??

I don't think there is any way of getting rid of waste in a perfectly green way.. It's a matter of picking the best of a bad bunch..

Afraid not but DUP Councillor was certainly the first to be poo pooing the idea on the radio this morning. And in all fairness they are the same party who's Environment Minister (Who I believe sits on Belfast Council) doesn't believe in Global Warming!! Maybe they had to "Toe The Sammy Wilson Line!!"0 -
In referance to the "Not giving a Monkeys"... what I'm refering to here is the Increase in Rates the good folk of belfast will end up having to pay due to the fines being levied by the EU!! Obviously you have deep pockets PC..0

What about pulling out of the EU state and deal with our own waste problem ourselves? Every waste problem is solved locally.0 -

Belfast City Council has decided not to allow a waste incinerator to be built on land it owns at the north foreshore of Belfast Lough. The council met on Tuesday night to discuss the issue.
It did, however, give the go-ahead for a mechanical and biological treatment plant to be built on the site.
Arc 21, a group of councils in the east of NI, wanted the council to accept its proposal so the facility could be built by 2016.
The incinerator would have been Energy from Waste (EfW) plant which Arc 21 said could have provided power for 40,000 homes.
A public consultation exercise had been carried out by the council, in which the majority of respondents backed the incinerator plan.
However councillors rejected it.
North Belfast DUP councillor Ian Crozier said the consultation showed that people who lived close to the proposed site of the incinerator were against it.
"The vast majority of respondents from the Shore Road were against the incinerator.
"For the past 40 years the people of the Shore Road have had every manner of disgusting process in their back yard - every piece of domestic rubbish from greater Belfast, animal processing, sewage processing.
"It's someone else's turn to shoulder the environmental burden."
Alliance councillor Tom Eakin who was in favour of the plan said an opportunity had been lost.
"This was was a state-of-the-art Energy from Waste plant that we were recommending - everyone would have benefited from it.
"What we have managed to do is set back the process of us controlling our waste
"The city council would also have received quite a few million pounds from selling of the land."
The decision leaves councils in Northern Ireland with a dilemma as EU rules mean they need to drastically reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill or face fines.
Some environmentalists have argued that more recycling is needed instead of burning rubbish.0 -
send it to the lost city, Craigavon0

sorry all you Criagavon folk
put it on the border and incinerate all our waste plus the stuff they send from the Republic.0 -
What about pulling out of the EU state and deal with our own waste problem ourselves? Every waste problem is solved locally.
What would be the incentive for doing something about waste then? Or the potential penalty for inactivity (apart from physically running out of landfill space)?0
