    Hi There

Personally I'd rather go with the advice of these people rather someone who has "been in the industry for years" but yet hasn't been aware of this.

That's very patronising and I take offence at that. There's no need for sarcasm. I don't care what the forums you've read say, I have lots of experience whether you think it counts or not, I run my own support business part time and I have various qualifications which I think entitles me to have my own opinion. CCleaner is a very straightforward application that is VERY low risk and if it was a choice between running that to see what happens and paying someone to have a look at the machine then I'd recommend CCleaner every time. It's not a high risk approach and if more users ran things like CCleaner once a month or so then I reckon we'd see a lot fewer people with problems.

Back to the OP. My advice would be to boot in safe mode, run CCleaner and a full virus scan and spyware scan. If that doesn't work then run HijackThis and post the log file here. Problems like this are more often than not software issues or configuration issues rather than hardware. Hardware issues tend to be more intermittent rather than rebooting at the same point every time. Aside from that, software issues are easier for us to talk you through troubleshooting. Hardware is much harder to talk you through and there's far less options.

No, not on the say so of others but many years experience using it and other registry cleaners for that matter. You are just scaremongering! If you don't want to use it fine but millions regularly do, with absolutely no problems.

    hi there

the fact that you use registry cleaners says it all

    regards

  • In the majority of circumstances if the PC doesn't startup correctly in either Normal or Safe Mode, it's likely to be hardware related. I would start with a hard disk check and go from there.

I've also been in the trade for over a decade and never heard of CCleaner or ATF cleaner before today :).

In this situation I would press F8 at startup and boot into safe mode. If the machine crashes in safe mode then I check the hardware first and then either reinstall or have a go at the system repair option on the windows installation disk (if I'm not pressed for time).

It's worth remembering that crashes in safe mode can also be caused by faulty memory, unstable power supplies, processor overheating, hard-drive dying and no doubt there are others.

I take back my advice. Ive only just realised its when the desktop loads (def' not the psu then)

Sounds more like a driver problem or suchlike. Open CCLEANER and goto TOOLS and STARTUP. What items are starting up with the pc?

  • Thank you everyone for their contribution.

Got home and tried some of the advice given.

    1.
Windows key + Pause/Break, Advanced Tab, Start up and Recovery Settings button, uncheck System Failure - Automatically restart.

I tried this using the safe mode but it wouldnt let me carry out the final step and came up with the message windows cannot send admin alerts unless the alerter service is running. Alerter couldnt be started in safe mode. I tried this then by logging in normally but the PC would restart before i could complete the instructions.

    2.
    Hi There

BEFORE booting into Safe mode etc, press F8 key BEFORE booting into Windows. You will then be presented with the Advanced Startup Menu.

Look for Last Known Good configuration, select and press Enter.

It could just be a faulty driver or software.

Tried this along with the system restor and the PC still restarted.

I have checked if the fan is working with the shell off the PC and that was fine.

The only thing i havent done is run the ccleaner, but how do i do this. Does this need to be installed on my PC? if so then i'm unable to gain intenet access to download as you've guessed it the PC restarts.

Can you boot into safe mode without it rebooting ?
  • Even using the safe mode would cause it to restart last night which hadnt happened previously.
