On the free Voyager 210 router there are two options to connection, via USB or via Ethernet.
If you're using an Apple Mac, always go with the Ethernet option. With a PC you can use either, however I always recommend the Ethernet over the USB if that option is open to you.
Kind regards,
Samara
I have a PC, why is the Ethernet a better option.

I sorry but there are cheaper ISP's around at the moment and i shall be moving if that is all they can offer me after 2 years with them!!
£17.99 a month is now expensive for just 5gb limit - as an example (there are lots of others cheaper) you can get double useage (10gb) on 8Mb for just £1 more - £18.99 (but cheaper overall - the first month is free) with eclipse if you migrate to them from maaf.
They give migrating in customers a free wireless router (maaf charge £31 inc postage for this), plus the first month free - so it averages at £17.40/month for the first year you are with them when you migrate in.0 -

I think the point with BT was that the other party to the DACS thing was nolonger using it - they should have taken it away years ago.
Today my "SCREWFIX" (B&Q in disguise ?) Catalogue No. 85 arrived.
On page 354 it is selling "Data Networking".
It looks to me as though what you call Ethernet cables etc. are on sale but described as RJ45 Booted Patch Leads?
Or one can buy the cable, fitments etc. and devise your own network.
The basic "Ivory" lead prices vary from 0.65 for 0.5 m length to 5.25 for 20m. with other options inbetween. Alternatively there is a posh looking "Cat 5E Coupler" for 2.99 (2.79 if you buy 5) or a cheap and nasty looking one for 0.90.
So, as I need to send them an order anyway, will this I solved my Ethernet cable requirement?
SCREWFIX sell "USB 4 port self powered hubs" but don't appear to sell the USB cable - but I think I can get it from our local TESCO.
Best wishes,
Harryhound.
Hi Samara,
I think I have managed to answer my own question, by reading the
"Voyager 210 ADSL Router - Quick START GUIDE" that came in the package of goodies: At step1 it refers to Ethernet cable (Yellow);
but on step4 (ie page4) it talks about Locate the RJ45 Ethernet socket.
So an ethernet cable and a RJ45 Booted Patch lead must be the same thing !
I have disconnected the hard wired big outside bell, so there can be no argument that it is effecting my speeds.
Today I have received the official "go ahead" email.
Am I right in thinking that after I have established the Broadband Connection
I can switch off the computer as long as I leave the router turned on and BT can carry on with their 10 days of line balancing ? (I ask this because I'm not yet satisfied with the protection I have set up on the new PC and as someone who got a virus in the past, I 'm not risking another experience like that !)
Best wishes,

Hi Anthony74,
Ethernet was designed as a network connection method where as USB was designed a way of connecting peripherals to a computer. USB has a shared bus so any USB devices are all using the same bus and bandwidth which means if you are using lots of USB devices at the same time as using a USB modem/router you may not get full speed as the other USB devices may be allocated some of the USB bandwidth.
Ethernet is only reliant on one set of device drivers where as USB requires the general USB drivers and then a device specific set of drivers.
If possible always best to use Ethernet over USB as it is less troublesome and more reliable.
Kind regards,

Indeed, after you've established your broadband connection leave the router on as much as possible. You don't need to keep the computer on, and BT will continue their testing during this time. (Remember to also have a microfilter fitted to every phone socket that is in use and to connect from that hallway master socket of yours!)
Of course make sure that you're properly set up with the right security software, viruses aren't fun!
Kind regards,

Is anyone else having problems with their connection dropping out and coming back on again every few minutes? This seems to happen every time I want to use the internet, which is extremely irritating as it takes hours to do anything.0

Hi Richiethekid,
This should not be happening. Let's troubleshoot.
Firstly, could you please do the following:
1. Ensure that you've got 1 microfilter fitted to every phone socket that is in use.
2. Double check that you're connecting from the master socket (internal wiring can cause disconnections).
3. Microfilters can be problematic if you are using a faulty one. Faulty microfilters will impact your speeds and you will get disconnections. To check your microfilters to see if you’ve got a faulty one, unplug everything from all phone sockets in the house, test each filter from the test port from within your master socket by connecting to the Internet. If you get a substantially lower sync using one of the filters you’ve found your faulty one and it will need to be replaced.
These three items are the most common causes of disconnections so I want to eliminate a device being unfiltered on your line, connection from an extension and a faulty microfilter before we press on.
Once you've had a look at those three things could you please PM me with the following information:
1. Your Madasafish username (so I can look at your account). Also if you're able to, could you please run a few speed tests in your account?
2. Confirm that you've performed the first three steps.
3. Include your Operating System and what kind of Router that you're using to connect. Also if you could please let me know if you're connecting via USB, Ethernet or wirelessly.
Thank you!
Kind regards,

See this webpage. MAAF will not be able to accept you as a customer, until you have an active BT line. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
