Comet - rubbish after sale service

From what you said, it seems you were sold a faulty product. It should have been replaced instantly. You say Comet tried to avoid doing that. That was pretty much my experience, too.
MSE is a strange place. For a supposedly consumer driven forum it seems to attract a number of posters who will defend the most atrocious service. It's hard to work out what motivates them.
There are a lot of people on here who say "RAWR! My consumer rights were violated because of XYZ! I know my rights and I shouted at everyone in the shop so that other customers could hear how illegal these people are being!"
When it turns out they have absolutely no clue what their rights are.
Now customer service is one thing, consumer rights are another. If OPs were more measured in their response: "I know my consumer rights entitle me to this, and you're acting within the law, but I feel that shop should have done this to inspire continued custom," then things would be different.
Myself, and others, are wary of letting people run amok with misguided ideas of what their consumer rights are. The banner of the site says, "cutting your costs, fighting your corner," it doesn't say, "cutting costs and wildly misinforming you so your ignorance makes you look like a total spoon when you go off on one in a shop."0 -

I saw this thread and had to comment - I have had numerous issues with comet - or did do last year - I now do not use the company at all even if they have the product I want at the cheapest price! I have also warned friends family of the problems I have had with them as well as venting on facebook (the power of facebook should hopefully dent their sales.)
We ordered 3 products from them last March after finding they had what we wanted at the cheapest price, we ordered a cooker, washing machine and fridge/freezer.
The items including instalation and delivery totalled £1,146.08.. including 10% off as we brought 3 products. The cooker we brought was also on offer originally reduced to £609 and installation was £55.49. So total for the cooker plus installation was £603.10. We paid this sum in the full and waited on delivery of our products.
The day of delivery arrived, f/f came in fine, as did the washing machine.. but then we were told our cooker had been damaged in transit. We were told someone from comet would ring us to arrange a new product being despatched and re delivery within 2 hours.
Nobody did ring - I eventually rung them as I wanted to know what was going on. I was stuck with no cooker and they had my £600!! The person I spoke to wasnt very helpful, just told me the product I wanted was out of stock, if I wanted a refund I would have to go into store to get one as that was where I got the product, alternatively I could pick a product of the same value or less and they would deliver it. I asked if it could be £20 over or so as I found a good alternative and I was told no. Despite me waiting in all day for delivery and it being THEIR fault it was damaged in transit they werent prepared to do anything to help me out!!!
We ended up going into store and getting a refund and deciding we would go to argos/john lewis to get the cooker even if we had to wait 2 or weeks for delivery. I noticed next day the cooker we had originally ordered was back in stock on the comet website so I ordered it straight away despite it not being on offer (it was over £700 if I remember correctly but we were desperate to move in to our new flat and comet were the only company where you could pick your delivery day)
I rung customer services expecting them to be quite friendly and honouring the 10% off I got in store on the original order as well as the original discount on the cooker for the inconvenience of having to stay in all day waiting for delivery plus not being contacted as promised... oh how wrong I was!
The lady I spoke to was rude and stuck up told me they would not be giving me any discount on the product, even after I explained what had happend. I shouldnt have been so stupid to order from them the 2nd time!
Eventually we did get our cooker, without discount, and I have learnt a very valuable lesson to NEVER, EVER, EVER use comet again. Their customer service is really lacking - I would much rather pay full price in somewhere like John lewis, and know that if their IS a problem, the company will sort it out and do anything to rectify it and help the customer - even going the extra mile.
I even wrote a letter of complaint to comet which was never replied too - this really was the final straw and I just gave up trying to get anywhere with such a useless company.
Comet clearly treat their customers like dirt, as they were so rude to not reply to my letter of complaint I refuse to use them anymore.0 -
Comet is good so long as the item is not faulty. Get a faulty item and your in BIG trouble.0

Comet doesn't tend to see it like that. If you're not bringing profit in on that ONE sale, then you're in the doghouse, regardless of if you generate plenty of long term profit. That's why I personally don't use tem.0 -
I bought a tv (Samsung d8000) on the 7th December 2011 from comet. This tv cost us £1450 and was the biggest piece of **** we'd ever bought. Tv had numerous faults which is a trademark with that model. Phoned up comet 4 days later, they sent out an engineer who wrote it off. Returned it to store on the 14th and they didn't give me any bother about returning it. However, despite paying initially by credit card, the woman "accidentally hit the wrong button" and then stated a refund would have to be made in the form of a head office cheque..... Which will take upto 30 days!! Not happy about this at all. Why not a refund via my card? Why does it take 30 days? They have the goods back and still have my money, which I'm being charged interest on every day!! It's day 26 now, still no sign of any phantom cheque.....
I had originally reserved one online to collect instore and when I turned up to the store they said they have none in stock - AFTER taking my money at the till first?! So i then ordered one online to be delivered. A couple of days later when it should have been delivered but didn't, I phoned up only to be told they have no order for this, although having taken my money?! When I got my credit card involved they then 'miraculously' found my order and cancelled it!!!! Over a few days this company was sitting on £4500 of my money!!!! What a joke comet are0 -
I bought a zannusi washing machine on 19/11/11 for my mum.
It was broken by boxing day.
Followed the instructions regarding the warranty in the paperwork that was provided only to receive a call a few days later saying that comet do their own repairs (already a waste of time).
Contacted the store who organised a call back - never materialised. Called again - again...nothing.
Called the after sales team directly to organise an engineer. Some stupid woman gave me the wrong advice despite me telling her the problem. I had done extensive research and would have fixed the machine myself had it not had the warranty.25 minute call charged at 29.75p/m despite the website saying 10p/m.
Called again...a man with a few more brain cells even confirmed that what the woman had said was wrong and organised an engineer.
He turned up today without the parts to fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even did a follow up call prior to the engineer coming to confirm it would be fixed on the day. Idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even i know what parts should have been brought to fix the stupid thing so why didn't he???????????????
NEVER EVER WILL I USE COMET AGAIN.
I will be emailing their MD to get this resolved

I have just received a call from comet advising me that the person who said it should be fixed on the day...shouldn't have - no help to me though is it! I advised her i have it on a recorded call that they said it will be fixed on the day.
They will not be offering compensation for the time my mum has had to take off work and won't be for any future dates she has to.
Nothing will basically be done. Bit of a pointless call.
I advised her i will continue to write reviews on the rubbish customer service i have received until such point that the matter is sorted - this appeared to be on no concern to her by the sounds of it.0 -
Can't we all get together to take some action?? Comet are just getting away with treating people like this.. there are hundreds of posts on these forums! I am sick of being treated like I don't matter especially when they have taken £239.99 to provide aftercare service that has left me, my husband & our 4 children without a working washer dryer since November. I am sick of the patronizing attitudes of Sarah Stark & Angelina at the MD Office - I wrote to the MD and he couldn't even be bothered to provide me with a personal response. They have to be stopped!!
I have my own thread under "Comet Must Be Stopped" & also threads on consumeractiongroup.co.uk "Comet service a disgrace" & Facebook under "Comet UK Must Be Stopped From Ripping People Off". I would post the links but as a new user the forum won't ltt me post links.0 -
Hi
I too am having very bad after sales service from Comet. I bought a Samsung Netbook at the end of July. I came to use it middle of November but coudn't because the pin in the charger had bent meaning that the charger couldn't be connected to the Netbook. Medical issues prevented me from contacting Comet until now. My son phoned on my behalf yesterday and after was told to BUY a new Samsung universal charger. But if we did this the T&C invalidate the whole warranty. On calling back today we have been told that we have either misused or accidently damaged they will not replace/refund.
After speaking with 4 different staff all of whom say misuse we are now sending a photoof the damaged part as we think that its become overheated an melted some component inside.
I am appalled that the immediate response is misuse.
The only way to stop this is to compaign and for everyone to stop buying from Comet. Lets hit them where it hurts - Sales and profit.0 -
