Comet - rubbish after sale service

  • I had similar problems with Comet a long time ago. It was a long time ago because I have not bought anything from them since!! It was a gas hob, they came round 3 times to repair it, never with the correct parts, so I took them to court for a refund as thye didn't answer my letters, but because I was still using it - how else could I cook? - the judge said I should have bought something else - he obviously thought I was rolling in money wi the cost of a gas installation twice over as well as buying 2 hobs - what if it was a new car - buy another one he said!!! - I was only entitled to a repair. They repaired it, at last, the 4th time. And that's the last time - the last time I buy anything from them. That was an expensive hob!

Don't you just love that moment when you realise you've wasted several minutes of your life reading an original post from years ago.

  • Their engineer originally came out on 25th November.... to cut a very long story short they kept fobbing me off for some 10 weeks that a part was on back order - anyway I spoke to SMEG directly and they hadn't ordered the part. Goes from bad to worse 2nd engineer comes out mid-Feb and says it's not what 1st engineer said was wrong and goes away to order a different part... 1st engineer re-appears on 28th Feb with new part but says it's not that it's what he originally said was wrong but he's not even tooled up to take machine out and have a proper look. He then tells me he'll get it written off. Get call from Comet managers office (spoken to so many people there during the past 4 months all hopeless liars...) and he says D&G have agreed to write machine off (1st March) Just spoken to D&G who said last they'd heard from Comet was 21st Feb and they hadn't agreed to write machine off... went back to Comet... and so it continues. Where do I go from here. No one at Comet cares they just try to say the right thing but 4 months later still no fix - they really are CRAP... and I will NEVER buy anything from them EVER AGAIN...

Sadly there is an inherent issue with the notion of "CUSTOMER SERVICE" at Comet. It runs through the entire mess. I wonder why comet is in such trouble? Selling overpriced "essentials" and failing to meet basic standards. I am currently in conversation with the "Directors' office" and it is like banging my head against a brick wall.

Why have you added this drivel to an ancient post?

I do apoligise for offending your sensitivities. Please feel free to control what posters wish to discuss.
  • Does anyone have a problem with this make of TV, mine constantly clicks at the power supply switch when trying to switch on. I purchased TV from comet in January 2007 and of course they won't entertain me,but under the sale of goods act 1979 you can make a claim for up to seven year if a TV is faulty or not fit for purpose, entitling you to a repair, replacement or partial refund depending on how old item is. Ultimately if purchase made with a credit card you can hold them equally liable under section75 for breach of contract. I hope this info helps.

The SOGA gives you up to 6 years to make a claim, but this doesn't mean that all goods are expected to last this long. It all depends on price, type of item, the use it's been put to etc.
As the TV you mention is now 5 years old, I wouldn't really expect Comet to do anything at all as 5 years is a reasonable life.

Even if you were to try to claim, you will have to prove that the fault is due to a manufacturing defect, and I would be very surprised if you could find a TV engineer who will be willing to state that this is the case with a 5 year old TV.
In the very unlikely event that you did get this report and Comet agreet to pay out, they would only have to pay a small amount as you've had a lot of satisfactory use from the television.

Best idea of all? Buy from somewhere that offers a better warranty.

    What breech of contract?
You bought a TV which has lasted for 5 years and now has a problem. No electronic item will last forever, and IMO, 5 years is a reasonable time for a TV to last.
As mentioned above, if you did try to prove that Comet failed to abide by the terms of the sale of goods act, the onus would be on you to prove that the problem wasn't due to misuse but was down to an inherrent fault. This would now be hard, if not impossible to do.
