Picking up money from the street...

I'm a picker-upper - I used to be embarrassed, but then I suddenly "realised" that I live in London and nobody who sees me is likely to a) recognise me again, and b) care what I'm doing anyway!!
Its a standing joke when I'm with my Dad in a carpark that we walk with "eyes down" looking for dropped change - he's done this for years and when I was younger I used to laugh at him, but now I'm strictly in competition(!!). Funny how it takes time for you to realise how wise and sensible your parents can be (I'm 33 this year and Dad is 70+... ) rather than just an embarrassment!
On the plus side, I have found a £10 note and a £5 note on the pavement before, as well as plenty of £1 coins.Biggest "haul" was £35 when I was about 15 - found it at the bottom of an escalator in a shopping centre about a month before Christmas (late night shopping). Rang police station who took my phone number and told me to hang onto it and if they didn't call me in a month that I could keep it - I couldn't believe my luck when nobody rang (in fact I called back after 6 weeks, just to double check that nobody had claimed it, before I spent it!! ).

i too know many a night club worker who 'volunteer' to clean up at the end of the night more often then not picking up more then they actually earned in the evening!

I remember once OH and me went for a walk and came accross a doughnut selling shop. We were short of 9p between usso we walked around the shop for ages until we found enough coppers
It took us so long and we were laughing so much that we didn't even eat the blooming things in the end :rotfl:

I found a £10 note on the street on Christmas Eve last year...not really had much luck finding anything else although I do remember finding a £1 note on my way to the shop when I was about 6 or 7!
My mum used to work as a cleaning lady in a pub and was always finding money - the odd £1 here and there, pretty much every day.0 -
I live opposite a corner shop
its great for picking up coppers all the little kiddies drop when they run home all excited with their sweeties :rotfl: I might have to dig out another moneybox and keep these seperate just to see how much we find

I'm definitely a picker upper, although I always worry that someone's glued the coin to the pavement and is waiting round the corner to have a laugh at me!
DD found £50 in a cash dispenser the other day but the most I'veever found is £10 in a library book.0 -
I don't usually look but I will now! If I ever do find 50p or more though I do hand it in, or give it to charity.I got a trolley in Sainsbury's before though and someone had left one of those keyrings in it that you use instead of the £1, so I'm keeping that,I can never find a £1 when I need it!0

I recently saw a programme on TV about female police officers in Liverpool and they were called out to an old man who had been mugged.
When the officer asked him what time it had happened, he said 3am!! She asked him what he was doing out at that time of night as it was dangerous - his reply was that he does it every night. He goes out at about midnight til 4am picking up money off the street. He said that he had made £1,000's over the years as people become drunk, fiddle about with their money to use the phone box or pay for chips or a taxi and they spread their money everywhere. As they are incapable of picking it up without falling over they don't bother so he goes and collects it all!!
He said the best places to look were definately around phone boxes as people call for taxi's.
I expect you'll all be out later - having a look!! As I live in the countryside it's not something I can pop out to do ... but I would if I could!

I remember once at a bus stop, an small old Italian woman spotted 3p on the ground and almost as excited as she could be declared to the entire queue "Looka!! I founda free pee! Nobody did see it but I founda it!" I do remember thinking that she was a strange old woman but then again, if she put that in a high interest savings account, it might be a twix by now :-\
I pick up all the time now0
