  • Glad to hear you're feeling better today Bob - and yah boo to Mr B spending money like it's going out of fashion. I'm not entirely convinced it's possible to teach men the art of budgeting - I've tried to persuade MrEH to go down that route but he's having none of it - more excuses than you can shake a large stick at. Still, I have got him trained that all non-cash spending goes on the cashback c/card, and so long as I nag a bit I usually get his share of the bill back in the joint account by the time the payment is due out. As a result of that he can only stuff up his own account, and that is his lookout. Thanks to things being tight in the joint account and mine this year (as a result of buying HIS car mind you!) he has actually coughed up for the deposit for the holiday cottage for next year's Hebrides trip too. :D I suspect you are right that the only way to sort it out is to tighten up the control on it yourself, but of course that brings with it other problems too, doesn't it.
Hit the nail on the head there EH, it is a fine line with nagging and budgeting:o I have to use a lot of humour and try and get him to think it is all his idea..so i may be going along the OS route, where he tips up the wages and i give him pocket money from this.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to get him to open another account, well one of them refused because he wasn't paying his wages in..honestly all he had to do was pay them in then set up a DD to take them out again, or the majority anyway....some things are beyond his pea brain at times.

As for holidays, well they have been financed by me the past couple of years and i found it a bit irksome when he sits there waiting for me to get my card out for petrol:mad: I left my bag a couple of times then he had to shell out a bit..a touch of meet me half way does help at times. He also has plans for next year, being a big anniversary and all...i hope he lives up to his plans, cos i ain't even contemplating until the outgoings are at least £400 less a month..which is a lot to pay off...but that would be a better present for me. Especially as the mortgage goes back on repayment in March..so he needs to get his thinking cap on.

Sounds like you are getting there with him....I have all the money in the house. now pay everything and DH and I get spends....we have done this for the last few years.
I do discuss the details of my plans to see if he has any ideas to add and he is using his brain now and sometimes even comes up with questions that need an answer that I may not of thought of...LOL..so he's getting there.
  • That does sound the way to go Taxi.
Was discussing this with him this afternoon and he is genuinly unable to see where his dosh has gone..then i pointed out that he has filled the car with petrol-£12 one day(sat) and then he filled it up with £42 the next. It showed up the at the same time. So he has not been in work all week due to oink flu, and should have some left over..but is a significant amount coming out of his money every week. My original theory was that if he had DS's rent money then that should cover it mostly..but have had to sub that and he still needs petrol on top.
I think i have an obsession with his bloomin car and how much it is costing him.

Cars do cost a fortune!!!..he does seem to use a lot of fuel though.
It maybe vworth keeping a spending diary for every single thing that goes out of the house moneywise and then you may be able to cut back on stuff.
IS DH wasting fuel..ie not combining trips and jobs that can be done together.

Fifty four quid a week is quite a bit...

I know, according to his car computer thing, he gets 37 miles to the gallon. It used to be more, but i have noticed that he fills up in different places so not always best value petrol IFYWIM.

I used to do the online one and still do one for myself..as i have an expense pot ( for work) and this tends to be for that really. I also portion out food bill etc. I have given him one of those cheapie notebooks from Tesco to fill in, in the past. So will do so again. I am more inclined to go along the Hypno route as in here is £20 make it last..because once it's gone it's gone.

I think he is terrible for this, as he will get in the car to go to the local shop which is a 5 min walk away..although he will conserve petrol by getting my car out of the garage and using that instead..he thinks it is more economical( which it is,but he doesn't replace petrol) Do you know i think i will have to start calling him Kevin the teenager..he acts like one.:rotfl:

I think that is for 6 days petrol Z...most of the time it should be for 5 days petrol. I drive further and only use about £35 a week at the most.

    I only get 28 - and I don't spend anywhere near that...

Being off his lazy arse and walking is even more economical...

Thanks Z i use petrol prices for the local one. How many miles do you cover in a week?

Difficult to say - my weeks are so variable. I do 50 miles in one week and 1,000 the next. When I do a lot of miles, my mpg then goes up a *lot* higher. Poky little journeys are bad for my car...

But for OH, at 37mpg, and 54 quid, we're looking at 10 gallons a week, aka 370 miles per week or approx 18,000 miles per year.

    Does that sound about right?
    And how do you get a r s e through the filter?:rotfl:

My arse fits easily though the filter. Must be slimline... ;)
