  • Food for thought there Z, i must admit that option didn't occur to me. I am going to look into it now and if it can be done, well i can't wait...hehehe

Next month i am keeping the money and he will have to ask me if he wants to fill up the car..sounds bloomin horrible, but it has to be that way now.

This is more or less what we do....sometimes I wish I didn't get that text that says "which account to I pay for Petrol from?", but it does mean that I know what is going out and when.

He sometimes jokes to others about not being allowed any more "pocket money"......but it is the way we have to do things to make sure we don't get massively out of our depth again, and it does work, so we stick with it.

hope you are all feeling a bit better now x

  • I have been asleep all afternoon and it was a proper sleep so thanks Hypno i do feel a bit better.
I certainly think it is the right way to go now, i have tried different ways of making it easier and we are showing precious little progress other than repayments and a lot of money being wasted. So it stops, we both have to budget as it is no use him thinking that because i have budgeted and the money is available then it is not for spends but repayments!
I just felt undermined all the time and it wasn't done nastily on his part, just thoughtlessly and of course avoidance of awkward conversations haven't helped either.

That sounds like a good option BOB as then you can account for every penny and if it achieves the ultimate goal then he'll get used to it.
Glad to hear that you are feeling better.

I am just in the throws of teaching my OH the wonders of budgeting! It has been me that has done it all in the past and his spare cash (and some of mine ) has gone on his thoughtless spends 'because it's there'.

Still avoiding the awkward conversations slightly though :o

    Good luck! Keep positive :A

  • Glad to hear you're feeling better today Bob - and yah boo to Mr B spending money like it's going out of fashion. I'm not entirely convinced it's possible to teach men the art of budgeting - I've tried to persuade MrEH to go down that route but he's having none of it - more excuses than you can shake a large stick at. Still, I have got him trained that all non-cash spending goes on the cashback c/card, and so long as I nag a bit I usually get his share of the bill back in the joint account by the time the payment is due out. As a result of that he can only stuff up his own account, and that is his lookout. Thanks to things being tight in the joint account and mine this year (as a result of buying HIS car mind you!) he has actually coughed up for the deposit for the holiday cottage for next year's Hebrides trip too. :D I suspect you are right that the only way to sort it out is to tighten up the control on it yourself, but of course that brings with it other problems too, doesn't it.
