http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=481412 for the wartime thread - took me a while to read it :o

Great, I will use it as my late night reading then!.
Just having a cup of tea then those curtains are beckoning me. If I dont start to sew them today I will never start. Its getting back into the habit of doing things after dinner instead of staying on here, or watching TV!

The landlord is the local farmer, so I will ask him.
I am scared of loosing the car, as I have had one for the last 30years. But now that I am living in a village without even a shop, its scarey. I would not even be able to go to the doctors!

    Food for thought...
I remember you said you had a large car. Would you be able to exchange it for a much smaller car which would be cheaper to run, tax and insure?
Would you consider a moped like DS ? They are very cheap to run.
What is the public transport to the village like? (I know it is probably hopeless but needs to be considered) .
How much would the occaisional taxi cost if you got rid of the car?

Yes I have a big car, a people carrier. I don't know howmuch I would get for it. I dont have any savings left, and am unable to have a credit card or loans etc as I was made bankrupt 2 years ago. (4 years to go!). I will have to really think about things as there are not really any buses here. There is one bus on a Wednesday and one on a Friday, to the nearest town. 7 miles away.
I have been looking into something they call a taxibus, that has to be booked. Need more details about it first.
I would be scared to death of a moped. I never really managed a bike. Two years ago my BF brought me a bike for my birthday. I had never had a bike before in my life. I hated it. I tried to use it to go to work, but the traffic scared me. Then it was stolen when my son lent it to a mate to get home!!.
Healthwise I would not manage a bike. I did think about it though.

Could you have your food delivered from Asda, Tesco etc? For the price of delivery, they pick and pack the stuff delivered to your door and that would work out cheaper and easier than getting a bus for that. (Especially as you are in pain with your neck.)

I was thinking along those lines too. If you consider car insurance, tax, petrol, repairs etc, I am sure that you could plan your trips to supermarket with dr apts etc and get taxis. Of course it will take good planning, but would cost you a lot less in the long term. Don't forget you may have a neighbour who goes to the supermarket and may like to share the ride in exchange for some petrol money.

It is worth a try. You'll get a bit of money for your old car. If it doesn't work out, you could buy something a lot smaller, cheaper to run and insure.

I forgot to say, I managed for two years without a car. Like you, I've always had one. It's amazing how quickly you adjust to it.

I am planning to use Asda. I cant use tesco as they wont accept electron cards. I do struggle to shop as I cannot carry the stuff.
I dont suppose my car is worth very much. Its a P registered Volkeswagon Sharan. Its not exactly showroom quality.!

I have just spent an hour and a half making the curtains for my bedroom. My arm is aching like hell, but at least I did it. I will get DS to help me put them up tomorrow.
Now its time to relax and get some sleep soon.!
I am trying not to worry, and to focus on positive ways to make changes in my spending, etc etc.

If only I could get a deal on a smaller car!! The government scheme would have been nice. But I just dont have the difference in cash to get a new economical car. Ah well.

You haven't put on the income side any Council Tax Benefit or Housing Benefit. Are you definitely not entitled to either of those? I put in some information based as far as I could tell on your situation and it seemed to suggest you should get both of those.

the other thing is that what you are paying on the old bills seems to be far too high. If they took you to court, then they would not get nearly as much as this out of you. Seeing a debt counsellor as Errata suggested would be a good plan, they could help you write letters setting out what you can pay. They might also be able to establish why you didn't get the help with bills you were expecting and get that changed too.
