I shall copy some of that onto my spreadsheet and will do my best to take on board the costs of Birthdays, Christmas etc.
I have not got logs/coal for fuel yet, this is becuase I have only just got settled here. But I wanted to start to stock pile it. I am used to having the heating on in my previous homes, so this will be quite strange.
I dont currently get newspapers, but I could ask my friends for thier papers instead of recylcing them.
I think I will have to get DS to go out and about for "firewood" in the hedgerows or what ever. Wind fall after the winds, like the winds we are having here at the moment.!
Certainly got some major challenges ahead!.
Think I need to be more craft orientated and recycling in a different way.
I was told by the jobcentre that I can earn up to £90 a week for a year, so I am thinking that perhaps I will take in some sewing. But that will not be that reliable as I have been out of the sewing circles for over ten years.
Talking of sewing. I must go and make my curtains. I cut them out on Monday. But havent done anything else.
I had put in my action plan that I would sew for 1/2 hour a day. To see how my arm would take it. No point in taking in sewing if I find I can't cope!.
I did write a long post but the computer biffed me off the internet so I lost it all.
Hope this one doesnt go the same way.
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

Also for fear of clogging up your thread a bit you could do some of the old fashioned following things:o:

    *paper bricks for fire,
*use a soaked and wrung newspaper on top of coals to make them burn longer and limit yourself to 1 scuttle an evening
    * use twigs for kindling or twisted / rolled up newspaper instead of buying firelighters
*wash house with hand soap and water (only got bleach for loo) - save on cleaning products
    * grow as much food as you can - on the windowsills and in old pots / containers so you dont have to bend.
    * have a limit on ammount of bath water (if you have a bath)
    * i know you like sewing so mend what you can and re - use old clothes by making them into something else.
    * you know about the bulk cooking and freezing i know but maybe have a look at the WW2 thread for extra cheap recipies?
    * Can you get out berry picking with ds in the autum.
    * I cant remember if you can knit but if you can you can make some lovely things for grandbabies :) and some items for yourself / ds
    * hand wash the little items of laundry as they come which saves me 1 load over the week
    * have fruit and porridge for breakfast its really cheap
    * limit lunch to soup and a sandwich or similar ammount
    * gives you the spare cash to eat meat, potaotes and veg of an evening.
    * i also only hoover once a week to save electric and go around using a dustpan and brush - but this is a little extreme i admit:rotfl:

I could be living in the 40's if i didnt know it was 2009:o

Right, I've had another look at it.
At the moment your car costs are just short of 25% of your income - you really need to consider if you can afford it.

    Old Electric £30.00
    Old Gas £30.00
I've assumed this is what you've agreed to pay to clear you debt from the last property. If so, do you need to add on gas and elec for the cottage ?
Are you paying the old bills off by DD? If so, you need to ensure none of them bounce.

I think I will have to get DS to go out and about for "firewood" in the hedgerows or what ever. Wind fall after the winds, like the winds we are having here at the moment.!

There's a law about collecting wood from other people's land so DS would have to ask permission from landowners. Then of course he has to get it back to the cottage, so what looks like a simple solution might not be so straightforward.

Bluntly, the only thing you need to take on board about birthday/christmas savings is that you haven't any cash for them. What doesn't exist can't be saved. Your family will understand.

I didnt know there was a WW2 thread. I will have to have a search for it.
I will also take on board the ideas of above.
I do usually only have cereal in for DS, I usually have toast, but have been having some cereals as I had them in the cupboard from living with twins.
I can knit. I knitted strips of carrier bags into a handbag just before we moved here.
I can recycle things clothes wise. For me at least. Although I have recently given away 5 bin bags full of clothes when we moved.
I have lots of cuppa soups from Approved foods at a silly price. I also have frozen the carcus's of the last couple of chickens I had. Ready to make into soups later.
The big freezer is on, but hardly anything in it.

Empty what's in it either into the other freezer or fridge then eat it. Then switch it off - it's eating your money.

The landlord is the local farmer, so I will ask him.
I am scared of loosing the car, as I have had one for the last 30years. But now that I am living in a village without even a shop, its scarey. I would not even be able to go to the doctors!

There is no room for the stuff at the moment. But I will turn it off as soon as there is space for the food.
Next month I was hoping to get my shopping delivered, once for the month. So I will need it then. But will take on board the costs now.

There is no gas in the cottage. Hence needing logs/coal in the winter.
I have allowed £70 a month for the electric here. But I hope to put that on DD.
The old bills, are on Payment cards. At the moment. I think that i will have to see what I can do to get those lower or paid off sooner if there is ever anything made extra.
Back to Hypno's thread for inspiration..
I am also paying off the old Council housing benefit overpayment at £11.50 a week. Thats going on until next April I think. I will have to go and have a check up on that.
