Tesco stopping free plastic bags - by stealth?

I think that the solution to the problem is not reusable bag, but instead making proper biodegradable bags(maybe made of hemp) that decomposes in a short period of time, and that gives off no gases in the process.0

I shop in asda and the women on the till told me that in about another year they won't even have the free bags in shops, and she told me that on the easter weekend Tesco stores run out of the plastic bags.
When i went to ireland a few years back the don't use plastic bags just paper bags for free or the 20euro bags.
I wish they'd have the free paper bags over here, they make great wraping paper with a few inked stamps on them.0 -
I don't think we should expect free plastic carrier bags these days. Lots of shops where I live do not provide them at all now. When you go shopping take your own bags - we need to get used to it.
I agree, unfortunately I often forget to put my re-usable bags back into the boot of my car once i've unpacked. I bet if they started charging for all bags, then i'd remember!0 -
when our tesco or asda run out of the free ones the give you the reusable ones for free,
i have no problems with reusable bags but im not paying to advertise the shop, if they want me to use them they should remove the shop name from the front of them or sell some with stuff on them that i would not mind advertising like jack daniels,
Interesting, ours don't! Our Tesco ran out of bags recently - it did seem genuine as all checkouts were the same. I was ready to leave my shopping when a box appeared, but no re-usables were given out. Other shoppers were loading into a trolley ā la Aldi.
Asda have become known on here as the bag police:D0 -
i dont know wot all the fuss is about... wot do u mean u wont pay for a carrier bag to help the supermarket with advertising... People pay over the odds to get a piece of clothing advertising a particular brand.....i.. sportswear...Nike,..puma... etc...
or any brand...
Yes but they are generally aged between 15 - 20 and not into doing a big shop:D

Crikey, this sparked a bit of a debate.
I agree with many of the posters in that I don't mind using my own reusable bags (in fact I always do if I am going to Tesco for a big shop - as long as I remember!) The point is that I would like to know in advance, so that I can be prepared by either having a bag with me, or accept the cost of buying a bag on the occasions I either forget, or just don't plan ahead. I was suspicious that Tesco were instigating this by stealth, rather than openly - but from the replies I'm not sure if many others have had the same experience, so maybe I am wrong.
Incidentally, I'm not sure how quickly all these supermarkets would have embraced the environmental benefits of the no bag policy if it wasn't saving them money.......0 -
What I would like is a bit less raging eco-zealotry from people who are never happier than when they are telling other people what to do.
The 'plastic bag issue' (in so far as there is an issue at all) is of tiny significance in the greater scheme of things. It was seized upon, however, by publicity hungry politicians as a gesture to gull the credulous into believing they were actually doing something.
It is truly depressing how many people simply swallow the nonsense pumped-out by pressure groups, politicians and the media and then rush around like happy little puritans looking for heretics to burn.0 -

Judging by the amount of people on here who use them as binliners, not even a little (people will now buy plastic binliners;)). I will believe the sincerity of the regulation when supermarkets are forced to reduce all the nonsense packaging - eg the ton of plastic round 4 tins of beans, 6 bottles of water etc. No-one will reuse that. Can people not just pick up 4 tins or 6 bottles? There is nothing to stop marketing to place an offer on buying more.

Re-using bags gives you the added bonus of a few tesco green clubcard points0

Just a word of caution of you do carry your own bags - the ones that say they are biodegradable really are! I kept a pair of shoes in a Co-op bag, and when I picked it up it disintegrated into a heap of what looked like Lux Flakes, if anyone remembers them.
That's why the Bags for Life are the best - you know they aren't going to fall to bits after a few months.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
