The one mistake people make about those of us in debt, is that they think we have run up these large debts living the high life. I don't doubt there are a few out there that have done that, but the majority haven't. QUOTE]
Hi geoffmr1
I so agree with you! I think most of us have been forced here by circumstances over which we didn't have total control. And do you know what really does my head in??? I'm good with money! I'm the one who always changes electric, car, house insurance etc and seeks out the freebies, bargains and charity shop buys.
Have been helping to support unwaged loved ones and got sucked into the downward credit spiral of having to buy food, petrol etc on a very low in
come.
It certainly opens your eyes to the behaviour of the big companies who once fawned for your business when you're on the 'wrong' side of the fence.
So to all those of us who haven't had holidays in the Maldives or bought a couple of Gucci bags on the plastic let's keep plugging on to repay what we owe and always remember don't let 'em get you down!0 -
Evening! twice in one day you are privileged!
I perhaps should have explained more about what my OH meant. I live in his house, we have nothing joint, we want to get married but can't afford to, we want to have children and make plans for the future but without my financial input its both unfair and unrealistic. He would love for me to go on the mortgage but its just not feasible - and I doubt I would be allowed. I don't want my bad debt to effect him anymore than it should do. He is very supportive and is very encouraging when i tell him how much I have left to pay off etc.
He bails me out all the time when I have car issues he helps out, if I cant afford to go out and all my friends are he'll lend me some money - and that's not encouraging me to live beyond my means, it's he just doesnt want me to miss out on the rare nights with my friends - which incidentally is only £20 on a night out!
He is very conscious of spending money as he has been caught out in the past, he keeps a spending diary everyday and knows where all of his money is and when, and that is to be commended! And he is quite honest that he doesnt want to keep lending me money as he doesnt want me to get any more debt, which I appreciate and fully understand. If i was in his position I'd get frustrated that both of our lives are slightly on hold for my errors!
Anyway - my little moment over!
As for telling my family i think your right that I dont have to tell them the extent just explain that for the next couple of years Im living on a tight budget which means new cars extravagant holidays weddings and babies might have to wait!!
Daffy - its the heart attack part im more worried about! I do think it would be a relief for them to know so that they know why my OH & I are not getting married etc.
Thank you for your comments - I love how everyone is so honest!!Debt Free Target: December 2011

Have not visited this forum for a while - had a baby the daylast my hubby and I posted (three weeks ago)!!!! Think it was the relief of lbm and knowing it can get sorted!!!!
Need more advice - this is where we're at...(you may want to read my previous posts)
-we've recieved the letter from cccs, we have to send them proof of income and statements from our creditors. (Have them copied and ready to send tomorrow).
-we have set a new bank account up with a bank we don't owe any money to.
-we have arranged for our next months pay to go into the new account and are about to move essential direct debts to the new account too.
-we have both just been paid and our regular direct debits incl the ones to the creditors are about to come out in the month ahead - but again we don't have money to live on.
so my questions to you fab people are...
-when do we cancel our creditors directdebits? Before our next pay? Or before the official dmp start date that cccs give us?
when do we inform the creditors - i think we're going to have to tell some this month as we can not afford to live without using credit cards again which is what spurred us onto this in the first place!
-will cccs be bothered as we've had to put some living costs onto cc before we were paid as needed food etc - so amount has changed for individual cc (but I actually over estimated the loan repayment figures I put down originally so the total figure I said we owe is more than we actually do - if you get my gist).
-do cccs accept print out statements from net as don't have paper bills for some???
Hope someone can help and that my questions are ok to understand (sleep deprived at the moment so a bit confussing/confussed!)
Thanks,
Cx
Hi Casr25,
If you have the new account set-up & your 100% sure the wages will definately get paid to the new account then I would cancel all your creditors DD's immediately. Just send them a token payment of approx £5 or less along with a letter explaining you're going on a DMP with CCCS & could they please freeze interest & charges. Also tell them that you'll send a further letter as soon as you have your DMP details & once the plan is organised.
Personally I hadn't used my cards for months (some were years) before I went on a DMP so I cannot say how CCCS or the creditors will react to you using the card right before you go on a DMP. I'm sure others have though & will be able to advise you better on that.
As for printed statements they will accept that. I sent printed screen shots from an account that I didn't have statements for & that was fine, so it shouldn't be a problem.:j DMP mutual support thread member - 135:j0 -

Another 2 questions to add to the above, sorry people...:o
How do I pay creditors when my new account has no cheque book facility (something that I requested???)?????
On the Notification of debt management plan letter that we send to creditors, section 6 asks for a reason why my circumstances have changed - what do I put there??? If we just can not afford to pay money out any more???
Also on the above letter section 7 asks for the month it is to begin but cccs havn't given us a month yet as we've yet to send in all our statements, signed agreement etc - so what should I put?
Eeeeee - so sorry for all of the questions!
THANKS AGAIN...

You could send them postal orders if you have easy access to a post office. Once your with the CCCS you just pay once a month via direct debit.:j DMP mutual support thread member - 135:j0 -

Hi Car, congrats on the baby!
I think I put 'Change of Circumstances' on my letter it was so long ago, I dont think they actually check it out just want a reason.
Alot of basic accounts don't provide a cheque book, I know I can't have one with the account I have. Also, I believe that cheque books are being fazed out so in the banks eyes they are a probably a waste of money to produce.
Do you have account numbers? Giro slips for the accounts? You can go into any post office and make a payment over the counter, or as Geoff said Postal Orders (you can also track these so you know when they've been cashed, i think they have to be crossed?) Someone else might be able to confirm that though I've not used them!
Good Luck - your doing the right thingDebt Free Target: December 2011

Hi Brussel Sprout,
You are nearly in an identical position to myself. I am the one on a DMP as it is debt in my name only, as my partners debt was paid off with a secured loan (How I wish I knew about DMPs then). So, my OH is not debt free either but seems to forget about the secure loan becuase as the main earner I pay the majority of this too. He is now being much more supportive though and comming around to our new MSE lifestyle which means he himself is not getting anymore indebted.
We too have put are life on hold, see my signatureand also get the hassle of parents regarding the married and children thing, particulary as my OH is an only child (we are both in our early 30's). Anyway I was at my parents the other week and nearly had a row with my mum over it so I justhad to be honest, let her know I wouldn't have a family until my debt was paid (no details of amounts) and it would be about 5 years yet!!! I also made them aware that I was no longer using credit cards and had become a budget / spreadsheet obbsessive which lightened the mood abut:rotfl:Hopefully they realise this will be to the benefit of my future child and I'm just hoping my bodyclock doesnt pack up by them!!!!
So I dont think you are the only one in the situation and putting it down on here really helps.
Regards
