Something is "ticking" my hard drive LED.

I actually have my old drive C: from my previous computer installed here as my backup drive - I mirror all my data files onto it and, every now and then, knock the entire contents down onto DVD. (That gives me two layers of backup protection.)
So my current driveis also bootable. When I booted from
my drive light was still "ticking".
I'm beginning to wonder if it's a driver? I've been updating them via DriverMax and maybe I got handed one that wasn't quite right? So if I start by running my motherboard installation disk and tell it to overwrite "newer" files, maybe that will get it sorted. If not I'll run my windows installation disk and do the same. What do you guys reckon?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. If your using Vista it is just how it works. Its most likley indexing files when idle.

So about the 27th of last month.
All I've been doing on this new machine is installing the basics and tuning it up. Well, that and checking out handy software.
If you've been following the story - I've just now finished overwriting all the motherbord drivers with the originals, and have also re-installed windows up to date (including drivers) as of my set-up on the 29th.
Still "ticking".
Next step is to re-install windows up to date but with no customisations.
After that I think I'm only left with format and start again. Unless anybody knows anything different?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Is indexing definitely unchecked?
Turn off indexing on particular hard disk drive- Open up “My Computer”. Or open “Windows Explorer” and then expand Computer tree.
- Right click on the hard drive to disable indexing (i.e (C:) drive letter).
- Select Properties on the contextual menu.
- Click on General tab if it’s not already selected.
- Untick (unselect) the check box for Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching option.
- Click OK, and wait for the index removal process to complete, which may take a few minutes.
- Repeat the steps for other hard drives if applicable.

Damn! I know I turned that off when I installed! For a bet my trial version of office turned it on while I wasn't looking.
However... still "ticking"...
Reboot. Stll "ticking".
It did say that there were some files that it could not change. So is it going to continue running just for those? If so, how do I REALLY turn it OFF!!!! Those 5000 entries are disk or registry accesses, which will be the cause of the ticking. If it ticks with only one drive attached, something (program or service) is accessing the disk, and that program shows the something as it happens. Look at the process column, and ignore the regopen/close/query lines.
The only other way of finding out is guesswork, and that takes much longer.0
