Of course the father is - and the father has give the OP his blessing to go ahead.

We may not know the answer to those questions, but neither do you. Whether it was revenge or not, that is not mental instability, but a pre-meditated decision to get revenge on the other party with no CONSIDERATION towards the children the mother left behind. Still a selfish act.
