Running Vista - (stupid I know)

Not stupid at all. Used to be a bad choice but it's actually a very good operating system and the majority of people I know run it happily. Part of the reason Vista is seen as bad is because they've heard from someone who read it somewhere that it was bad but usually they have no reason for thinking this.
It was initially seen as a very poor option due to the incredibly bad driver support and various bugs and errors which some people encountered. The driver situation is far far better now and driver support is actually very good. A lot of the bugs and errors have also been resolved and it's certainly in no worse a situation than XP was a couple of years after it's release. It's not perfect but I find it a very stable operating system nowadays even using the 64bit version which used to be the worst culprit.
So.. basically what I'm trying to say is don't stress about using Vista. It's actually good now.

    Hi Stuart
    F8 didn't work but F12 did
    Started in Safe Mode
Went to run in Accessories and entered chkdsk /f /r and then y to restart.

Before I restarted it said the following on the 'Run' screen:

    File system is NTFS
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the vol is in use by another process.

When I restarted it did run what appeared to be a very limited chkdsk but I did not see any errors or fixing happening.

I probably do have a Vista DVD somewhere - It'll take me a while to find it!!

Thanks very much for the time you're taking to help me.

I was going to suggest this. Don't know how I missed this post when I was reading though. Did you get a chance to try this ? (Edit : damn, you posted while I was replying lol)
You could also try downloading CCleaner and running the scans and fixes on this. Might clear out some of the problems you are having and make doing the full chkdsk easier or less problematic.

    hi there

if u dont have a vista dvd u can download a recovery disk here:

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,71039/description.html

this will give a recovery disk where u can run chkdsk independant of the OS

I've tried to download this but 'Divshare' comes up recommending that I become a member as the uploader has exceeded its limit - what should I do?
