Checking OS Disk with errors - not working!!

Hope someone can help!

Running Vista - (stupid I know) and want to set a previous restore point as the system has errors and Firefox and Internet Explorer are not working. (I have uninstalled Firefox and am currently using Google Chrome if that's useful!)

When going through the system restore process it tells me my OS has errors which must be checked before proceeding with the system restore - However neither the 'automatically fix file system errors' nor the 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' actually starts! thereby not allowing me to restore to a previous point - it also does not show restore points earlier than 21st May 2009 and ideally I would like to restore back to April this year.

I have also tried to do a virus check using Virgin antivirus software but it crashes at 3% of checking. Can anyone help me understand why I can't proceed?

Thanks in advance.

    hi there

you have to restart the system for the chkdsk to start as it cannot get exclusive access to the drive.

so select 'automatically fix file system errors' and the 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'

and restart your system and the chkdsk will scan on reboot

    regards

I've done this twice and the chkdsk does not run! Is there any way of starting it manually via 'run'?

It doesn't actually have a dialogue box that prompts to disk check on reboot. I ticked both options, clicked the start button - at which point nothing happened, and then restarted the computer.

Did as you suggested but I didn't see it run through chkdsk on restart - seems very strange. Even when you shut down improperly it should run a chkdsk on start!

    Any other suggestions pls?
