Cereal Brand Substitutes

In my quest to save money, and manage a month without running out of food i want to cut back on the amount we spend on cereals.I generally buy Morrisons own brand but name brand when it's on offer.

OH eats cereals as snacks/supper aswell as breakfast so he can get through it! I buy the Coco Pops when they're on offer £2 for the big box.

I bought some Weetabix substitute yesterday friom Asda - 75p for 36, "Sunny Bisk" and they are foul. OH won't eat Morrisons' version of Rice Krispies (says they're too soggy) and doubtful he'd entertain the idea of shops own Coco Pops.

We usually buy Morrison's own Weeatbix, and Asda's own Choc Hoops type cereals for DS.

Has anyone encountered shops own cereals worth avoiding, and any that are no different to the Kellogs etc alternatives?

Tesco value coco pops are vile.
Their own brand of coco pops are just as good as Kellogs.

Have you thought about doing a 'blind taste test' on him? It's how I have cured most of our household of their brand name prejudices. Our cereal goes into Tupperware-type containers (it's never a good idea to store cardboard pacakging in your cupboards anyway, lol) and I introduced Sainsburys own brand Weetabix without telling anyone. Not a comment (adverse or complimentary in over a week's usage). We now don't pay more than £1.15 for 24 'Weetabix'. Same thing happened with Sainsburys basics tea bags (28p per 80 and fairtrade!). Oh, and Sainsburys basics Ketchup (40p as opposed to £2! Less salt also).

I get weetabix from Morrisons and they are fine, have had Tesco weetabix but i think they are a bit dry.

Thanks for the replies, we'd also buy Corn Flakes, Sugar Puffs, Shreddies etc.

Carmine, i have thought about saving the coco pops boxes and stashing a cheaper version in there as we have no tupperware but he's far too on the ball for me to get away with that, he knows how many portions are in the box at all times

Sainsbury's own rice krispies are really nice and I agree about Tesco own brand coco pops which are very chocolatey and don't have that slightly stale taste that some own brand ones do. But Kellogs cereals are £2 a box for Crunchy nut cornflakes, rice krispies and coco pops at Tesco - probably more types on offer but that is what I bought, big boxes and they have the "free box of cereal" offer too xx

I actually prefer asda's rice snaps to kellogs rice krispies. cant remember the price of them, about 60p cheaper i think.

Sainsburys own shreddies are just fine. In a tupperware box Dh and DS didn't noticed when I switched.

The weetabix from Lidle however were vile. Like flattened pieces of cardboard

lidls shreddies,cocoballs n frosties aren't bad..kids havent moaned! I put them in tupperware boxes as soon as i buy them and then they are no wiser!!

dont buy tescos weetabix they are just dreadful..but the birds weren't complaining!!!!

I buy mostly Asda own brand cereal for the kids the 2 for £2 ones. I mainly get the coco-pops, shreddies, rice- crispies, choco-flakes, the kids seem to love them.

I know it is probably not what you are looking for but don't forget good old porridge (sp?). 59p for 1kg that will feed the family five times over. I am lucky, my little people love the stuff and a superfood to boot :j.
