Doggie poo - what do YOU do?

Two things:
First, whatever did we do years ago? I seem to recall there was none of all this picking up poo. You would train your dog to do it just on the other side of the kerb so it was doing it in the road, then I suppose the road sweepers would get it up.
We used to avoid the pooh and the councils used to employ more people to clean up after inconsiderate people.0 -

No it isn't. Nothing wrong with putting dog poo into the sewer system. Anything other than poo, wee and toilet paper MUST NOT be put down the loo, as other items DO cause problems. So no nappies, sanitary towels, cotton buds, jonnies, plastic bags etc - they all have to be screened out as much as possible and sent to landfill, so please put them in your bin to start with.
Bacteria isn't killed in sewage treatment works - it positively flourishes - that's how most sewage treatment works in the UK function - it's called the Activated Sludge Process. The final effluent in many modern treatment works is treated with UV light just before it is discharged, to damage the DNA in the bacteria and stop them reproducing.
Chemicals aren't used in the treatment of sewage, other than occasional dosing to reduce phosphates and nitrates from agricultural runoff and also to assist in the formation of sludge.
We currently feed our dogs Royal Canin and are amazed at how much their poo has reduced compared to any other foods we have tried. Avoid Bakers, as your dog will turn into a sausage factory!
Those 'dog loos' which you bury in the ground and add formaldehyde and water are awful. Possibly OK in dry sandy soils with one dog, but useless anywhere else as they won't drain away properly.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
:mad:I agree 100% about people picking up dog poo, sealing it in a plastic bag and then just leaving the bag in the hedgerow, or side of the path - are they completely mad:mad: We have seen loads of these and I always say to OH it would be much better to just leave the poo as it is than do this.
If I ever have cause to put dog poo down the loo, I just pick it up with some toilet paper and flush away, wouldn't use any type of bag.
I can't believe that it is illegal to put dog poo down a loo - is that definitely true?
When you think about some of things humans put down toilets that they are not supposed to - e.g. tampons, sanitary towels, nappies, etc etc, I would have thought that dog poo would be far less harmful.
the things put down there that we are not supposed to clog up the water cleaning system & add to the costs - I would presume human waste isn't presumed to contain that found in dogs & cats & as such it's better NOT to flush - enough to make me drink bottled (but I can't afford it) yuk!0 -

I wouldn't think there is a lot of difference between human waste and dog waste really.
Lots of humans eat a load of cr*p and lots of dogs eat very high quality food (my dog certainly does), so what's the difference?Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
And for all we know, some people may be chowing down on dog food ! My uncle was very fond of the occasional dog biscuit..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I came across this on my research last week. I have a wormery but was surprised to find this http://www.originalorganics.co.uk/pet-dog-poo-loo-wormery.htm I'm assuming the Bokashi Bran would reduce the smell( at least I hope so).Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

our local council gives away free poop bags, they are supposed to be biodegradable not the usual plastic.
there is a big problem in an area where i walk my dog, people put their poop bags in the poopie bins only to have the rats take them out leaving plastic bags all over the bushes.0 -

My pup used to be fed JWB and it really didn't agree with her! She is now on Orijen and her poo is much 'nicer', IYSWIM.0 -
That can't be right! Most dogs only go 2 or at the most 3 times a day. Who owns these mythical dogs that are full of poo?
Walking stimulates the guts so if we go on a longer walk my dogs produce more poo ! Not a lot but enough to need picking up! One mile will produce approx three poos per dog. Twice a day that's quite a few bags.
I always pick up if it's somewhere where others may walk in it accidently. This includes our well used rural footpaths. I don't think the joggers want it on their trainers.
I've been trying to use the degradable nappy bags but the cost can be offputting. Boots had an offer a couple of weeks back so I now have 900 in stock, should last me about 5 or 6 months !
The bin smell is decreased by double bagging. I often use an old supermarket bag as the outside bag it still helps reduce fumes , particularly worthwhile at the beginning of the two week emptying cycle.
I have been known to check the lawn and take a couple of loaded poo bags with me on the walks to pop into the council bins!Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20
