Doggie poo - what do YOU do?

Hi all,

Just a brief one. I let my doggies use a small area in the back garden to do their business due to the lack of doggie bins around here on the beach, yes i ALWAYS SCOOP if they do go while out but now i'm thinking i should be greener about the matter - more due to the amount of plastic doggie bags we go through.

They still get their daily walks, just its easier for me to scoop from the back garden than carry doggy poo around and then home with me :eek:.

As we only have one of those little kirb sized bins the dog poo can become a little smelly when you lift the lid.:o

Do any of you flush it? If so where do you get your flushable bags? Any good prices?

Or has anyone used one of those doggy loos that you put activater in?

Our garden is small so the less it collects in a bin or something is better due to smell.

So what do you do? Baring in mind i'm trying to be greener for ease as well as environmentally.

I bag and bin, but recently read about biodegradable bags, currently using shops own brand nappy sacks

Ewww i have just read somewhere that the typical dog owner uses 6-8 doggie bags a day - Surely not, I use on average just one per dog, per day!

By the way i have 2 dogs, and each 'go' once a day, pretty routinely.

That can't be right! Most dogs only go 2 or at the most 3 times a day. Who owns these mythical dogs that are full of poo?

Lol, i know! I read it and gasped - i am now waiting for someone to tell me theirs does...then i'll be gobsmacked - how on earth could you keep on top of picking up all that poo, eww!

I'm lucky, since changing mines food do one with much less fillers their poos are much less frequent and tiny in comparison to what i used to be picking up. Lol, sorry to anyone who is reading this, and unlucky enough to eating right now.

The average owner will have more than one dog so the number will be higher per owner than per dog

We have three dogs, each three poos a day!

At home we have a horse sized pooper scooper and a very large garden: we have a poop place whee it ''composts'' inoffensively. We live in in a very rural location, no one poop picks up here...on local roads and tbh its not a huge problem. In the village proper I suspect they do, and think it would be more of an issue there. (no pun intended) I think thats why they head outof the village for walks.

We do just use plastic collecting bags when out where picking up is appropriate.

The newer 'complete' dry dog foods are supposed to make dogs 'go' less. Unfortunately they don't make picking it up any more pleasant!

Thanks for the replies. I have to pick up every one as it happens almost due to having a tiny garden that my 3 yr old is always playing in - she'll be the first to tell me ''the dogs done a poo, come and get it'' at the top of her voice - loud enough for all the neighbours to hear from INSIDE their houses, lol!

Hoping to get away from the plastic bags though - i think if i can find flushable bags that aren't too expensive as most i've seen are then i'll be flushing.

I also saw an interesting contraption you add to your waste pipe in the garden so you can tip it straight in there and it'll end up with your normal water waste- only prob is it needs a hose attached to flush and we dont have an outside tap.

The other option is the doggy loos that you bury half in the ground and add some activater to get rid of it - Just thinking that might work out a bit smelly in a small garden and i really wouldn't want to be emptying out a couple of weeks worth of poo mix if it went wrong - yuk! Anyone have any ideas one these and if they are worth it or not?

I tried degradable flushable pooh bags for dogs and they are useless. If you put them in a back pocket the heat makes them gel together so you can't open it. After a month or two the bags gel together so you can't get them open. They are very slippy and impossible to tie.
You can buy an attachement that fits to your outside waste pipe which lets you scoop and drop in.

I always pick it up in a bag and put it in my wheelie bin. I don't seem to have a problem with the smell and my wheelie bin is emptied every 2 weeks but if you tie it securly in a proper pooh bag there is no problem.

If you don't pick up your dog pooh anywhere rural or not (unless you own the land or have the land owners permission to leave it there) you are commiting a criminal offence. If your garden becomes full of pooh and the smell causes a nusiance your local council can order you to clean your garden and prosecute if you don't. If you fill your bin with dog pooh thats not in bags your binmen won't empty your rubbish.

Sadly its a necessary evil to put your dogs pooh into bags. If you can scoop it into the toilet then great but otherwise its best just to bag it and put it in a secure bin.

I bag it if it is more than one but use the scoop for the cat litter tray and put it in the loo.

It did read somewhere (on the www) that it's not a good idea to put it down the loo as it is different to ours and they can't deal with it very well at the sewage works?

Or did I dream that?

*LOL* what a thread! It's given me a laugh to start the day off!!

Well having a chihuahua, there isn't much mess at all but I use those mini freezer bags (I can't begin to count how many of em I have in my handbag at any one time and stuffed in coat pockets ready to be used!) ... I bag it and chuck it in the wheelie bin and as the other poster who does the same said, I don't have any problems with pongs in there.

I do the same with the cat's poo too .... bag and bin.

When I used to have greyhounds, I used to take a little hand held shovel with me out on walks and copious amounts of carrier bags stuffed into my pockets .. raised a lot of eyebrows but people used to say well done for being responsible *L*
