I agree that some of us on MSE express a little glee when it goes awry for the people on PL. But I think that is mostly because they are often quite arrogant and irritating (eg converted-station man last week).
I can accept that they are chosen because they are annoying and the show is edited to show them as muppets. Still, they are quite often puffed-up wannabees who wanted to be on telly and show us how clever they are, aren't they? If there was a nice couple who had worked hard, followed Beeney' advice, and still lost money, then I would feel sorry for them.
Power-boat woman (on next week) looks a bit scary. But again, like the 'model' the other week, isn't this someone who just wants to be on telly, not bothered which show it is? Come Dine With Me and now PL. Nice research by the way.
I missed the first half of last nights. Why did they fall out with the builders on the oast house? Also, Beeney definitely said at the end they were trying to rent it fot £1500 a week.. didn't make sense.
edit: Anyone watching Home for Life, BBC 2, Weds 8pm (also on iplayer)?
Two designers help families do their house up in the style they want, ignoring all this paint it neutral type stuff. Last week there was a rich pharmacist who had a huge house in Aston which he and ex-Miss Sri Lanka wife made look a complete dogs dinner - mural on ceiling, wavey fireplace ('to remind me of the tsunami'). Basically an exercise in showing-off, very keen to tell us that lots of footballers lived near them. Good on them, I guess, for having individual taste and not worrying about the fact that they've devalued their house, but whoa was it bad.
I did wonder if they had low-self esteem as they were so obsessed with wanting to show off their wealth.
I was going to start a new thread, but not sure it fits with this board.. just wondered if anyone else saw it.0 -
Strangely Beeney never adds interest repayments on mortgages to the figures thrown around. The most that's done is mention of delays "costing money".
Costs involved in buying/selling also don't get a mention (estate agents, solicitors, surveyors, HIPs, etc).
This means the paper profit is always overstated on the show.0 -
I have just had my lunch in the kitchen diner instead of sat at the table in the kitchen.
What a difference.
A much more intelligent use of the living space.

Not necessarily. In the old show format they used to include repayments in the budget, presumably they still do now but they don't break the budget down like they used to, saves time I guess. The amounts some of them spend on work, I'd be flabberghasted if they didn't include repayments.
Selling fees, maybe not. But then they generally haven't sold the property for the given price anyway so it's all just a bit of fun.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Hi seven-day-weekend, please tell us more about your house in Spain. It sounds awesome!!!!!
Thanks.
Rob
Really? What do you want to know?
Basic info: It is a traditional village house on the southern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains, built in Berber architectural style as is common in this part of Spain. Its flat roof is used as a roof terrace. It has three floors, two bedrooms and a study, a shower room and a downstairs cloakroom as well as the living area.
We also bought the small adjoining ruin which when renovated has given us a large bedsit room with covered terrace on the first floor and a large workshop downstairs.
We have no land or pool as the house is just built into the mountain.
Total cost including renovation about £60k.
I don't know how to post pictures, but here is a link to the Home Exchange site that we belong to, you can look at the pictures on there.

I'll save you guys clicking on the link. Nice. How has the slump hit that part of Spain? Probably not as bad as the Costas as it's not over-developed.0 -

Thanks for putting the photos on.
This part of Spain had high unemployment BEFORE the recession. Many of our villagers have several means of bringing in the income, e.g. they will have half a mountainside full of olive trees as well as being a builder and may even run a bar too. MOst are self-sufficient in vegetables, which they grow on little terraces on the mountainside.
Prices have gone up and even here half-finished building developments have ground to a halt.
Thanks for your interest.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
