From memory (so not terribly reliable!) I thought the sisters were married to builders? Bit dim anyway. I wouldn't have touched that library conversion with a bargepole! No car parking! I don't own a car at present, but imagine trying to sell it. Two hopes of that, Bob Hope and No Hope.
Oh, I used to love Bank of Mom & Dad, but I don't have sky or whatever either. I could never believe the number of kids who had no idea that if they spent - on a regular basis - more than they earned, they'd end up skint. Marvellous.
Is Alvin Hall on sky at all? I love him!0 -
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!! I WANT NEW EPISODES!!!!!!
This is ruining Tuesdays.
I couldn't agree more, I watched all of these and watching them again for the sake of a five minute update at the end is sooooo pointless, but I keep putting them on in the hope there will be something new!One Debt vs 100 Days Challenge - £2000.00COMPLETED :j0 -

Thank goodness...I am a fan of Alvin Hall....and I confess, I bought his book a long time ago..I have never, ever heard of another fan of his.
I loved his telly style too and insight to some of the issues that can prompt overspending...he is a recovering spendaholic...also, he is the only person who writes on debt and budgets from a self employed viewpoint. Reg Salaried people have no idea what it is like to budget on a variable income, year in year out.
Best, Best advice he ever gave (many years back) that stayed with me was for the self employed.
Rather than live within our means (as we don't ever really know for sure what our means will always be), you tot up what you need turnover/profit wise or the year.
You then work through the year and, at some point will, hopefully, reach break even point on annual salary needs. After that point, the rest is savings/non essential spends etc.
Like wise, if you are slower to reach it, hold back on non essential spends.0 -
I am a huge Alvin hall fan. 'Your Money or Your Life' on BBC2 was a great show, though I like Spendaholics a lot too. They should bring Alvin's show back - I think he really understood why people over-spend and his advice was always sensible and achieveable.
I thought one of his best pieces of advice was to try to have 3 months salary saved in case of emergency. Also, if you see something you really want to buy, wait til the end of the week - you will probably find you don't want it anymore.0 -
Alvin talks funny ... people who talk funny annoy me.0

I hate this kind of thinking.
If you earn £1000/month and essentials cost £900, it would take nearly 3 years to save that much up, by which time you might have needed it for emergencies. If you earn £2000/month and essentials cost £900 it's quite easy to do.0 -

I didn't see the end of the bristol house though, sadly
Their asking price reduced by £30K as of today. What.. no eager buyers in this mini-boom worship property no matter the cost? With that reduction it is only brought into line with the average of the 2 or 3 EA estimates they were given by Beeny at the end of the show. Even at £495K it still melts my mind.
I only favourite'd this place on Rightmove because after all they went through, he said with a big smile he'd be straight in to do it all again (borrow money to develop a home to sell on)... but admitted his wife wouldn't be so keen.
Edit update 9th May 2010: New Rightmove link: Guide Price £495,000

Update 31st July 2010: Can't be bothered to post this up as a new reply and have the thread bumped to top of forum.
There are only a couple of properties from the last series that I can clearly remember. Just updating details on one of those here (still for sale).

From £400,000
Price Range: £400,000 - £430,000
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-30305336.html
Street View (Give it a few seconds to acquire position) (no 10)
Awaiting any houseprices.co.uk update (bought for £330K, then redevelopment spend)
Checking other homes nearby 1/4 and a 1/2 mile, it seems nearing competitively priced (in market still prone to massive future adjustment). Lesser homes are STC at higher asking prices.0
