I haven't looked at the link itself but surely with Technet the licenses are only valid whilst you have a technet subscription?

Not true exactly, you just can't generate any new keys while its expired

Are you sure? Why would Microsoft offer lifetime perpetual licensing on multiple products for absolutely nothing?

Well normally you would have to pay for this, but for now it is free, don't ask me why Microsoft does these things, only they can answer that one for you.

With the normal Technet the license expires when your subscription does though?

MSDN / technet downloads are for EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT ONLY. even for normal subscriptions, keys do not expire after your subscription does
using them for any other reason is a breach of a T&Cs.

this offer is a mistake, aparently it was only supposed to be avaliable to a select few people

Am I right in saying that whilst the key won't physically 'expire' after the technet subscription does, you'll essentially be in breach of the license if you continued to use them?

Rob is spot on, we have various subscriptions, and all can only be used internally (we are an IT company), for testing, development etc, they can't be used as an end-user product, or for home users etc.

The only thing that expires is access to the download and key generation. Using the software during or after your subscription, not in line with the T+C would be a breach.

Some of the keys don't require activation, because us developers often have to wipe and reinstall virtual tests many times.

I would imagine that once Microsoft see the server activity today and the amount of keys generated, they're going to realise what's happened.

Would they really go after someone who has downloaded a copy of vista ultimate just to use at home ?

I guess it's feasible that they could flag all the keys today as invalid just to prevent people from using the software after a certain point.

But then they might just as easily accept it's a !!!! up and let people keep and use the software they've downloaded.

it has to be a !!!! up though ..
