I am now a sky tv customer have got my same package for half the price 5 pound instillation cost all other cost waived very pleased and my prices will stay the same for 12 months this includes a brand new phone line being installed. Virgin media had no ability to improve my costs so cancelled without any hassle I got the impression the girl was dealing with this situation on every call she received.

    I need your help....

I Moved from Sky/BT/Orange a couple of years back to Virgin - the full package - TV, Broadband & Landline in a consolidation & costcutting exercise.
I have to say - their broadband is 2nd to none.
Plus I do like the Tivo box we moved to last Sept/Oct.
BUT the prices have crept up & up, and now they tell me they are adding a further £4 (yes - I know its only £4!) to my monthly bill - this will take it to around £62 a month - excluding any "stray peak calls",and I DONT EVEN HAVE SPORTS OR MOVIES!
I have a Tivo box, an extra box upstairs, XL TV, Evening & Weekend Calls, L Broadband, + Phone line rental. (Plus As Part of the Tivo deal _ I'm on loyalty discount of £8 month until Oct! taking me down to £57) - by Oct I'll be paying £70 !! - HELP !!!

    Thanks macman,
What about virgin offering not to increase the price from April after receiving the price hike letter.
will that make it impossible to disconnect?

I called VM after receiving this letter and they refused to honour the charge-free cancellation. At first they "offered" not to include the increase, I told "Graham" I still want to cancel and he said "because we have have offered not to increase the charge that clause is not valid". I didn't accept this, he then said said "you received this letter in error, there will be no price increase for you so section J5 is not valid in this instance". I am outraged and refusing to let this lie.

    A) You call to cancel.

    B) They offer a sweetener to stay.

You can still refuse their offer of B. You don't have to accept it.

And, you don't pay the remaining months of your contact either. You pay a fee per month per service which should be much lower than the monthly subscription. Stick to your guns. "hello, I'm calling to cancel due to the price rise as my contract allows under clause x.x". "Can we offer you a deal to stay?" "No. This increase has put me off, as you could put the price up next month. Thank you"

You have missed their trick. They will offer B, then you refuse.

    C) What they say is that "the price will not increase, and the letter was sent in error and is therefore void. If there is no actual increase, then section J5 cannot be implemented."

The lady I rang at the end of the day sounded so tired and fed up that she didnt even attempt to haggle with me - it was a case of 'yeah, fine when can we pick up the box?' !

I'm not wholly sure Sky will be any cheaper once I tot it all up - I'm worried I may be leaping from the frying pan back into the fire....
  • I have got Broadband L only.
Thank for all post, they very useful. I'm going to cancel or not to stay with them longer than my MINIMUM SERVICE PERIOD: 12 MONTHS, with CONTRACT DATE: 13TH MAY 2011. As I see above VM is very strict, so my question is: What date I should send letter to VM Swansea with letting them know I'm not going to stay with them over my minimum service period? What means 30 day notice, is it minimum time to let them know, or I have to do that exactly 13 April 2012. I do not want to do so to early or late and thereupon pay disconnection fee. Can I let them know now?

Do I have to return modem-router, I did get free?

I am about to try and cancel (we are in month 16 of an 18-month contract). Apart from the price rises, I think it is also relevant that they are changing the time that evening calls start, from 6pm to 7 pm. So, for someone who pays for the Evening & Weekend call package, you are losing an hour of free calls per weekday. This is a very significant proportion of the free calls bearing in mind most people will call between 6pm & 9pm or perhaps 6pm and 10pm. This alone must be good grounds for cancellation.

Our cable went off on Friday.

Just collected a sky hd box for 30, pushed in a blue sky card and have a £30 freesat recorder!
  • Just to let you know, I too recieved the letter saying our price is going up by £3.50 a month so i rang to cancel. We have phone XL TV and broadband with them. THey said they could do the broadband for £17.50 a month but as i woiuld only be cancelling two of the services we would have to pay a £97 cancellation fee!! So i cancelled them all!!! It was very easy to do and the guy was very helpful. I am now onthe look out for another deal elsewhere but we have been moaning for ages that the TV package is rubbish and full of repeats so we are just going to look at getting a Freeviw box for now until we can afford to get a package whcih wont be until later this year due to other expenses we have right now. So any good deals please let me know :D
