  • After being taken by Cento Client Review for £200, I decided to cancel the agreement, first I had to write them a letter stating that I wanted to cancel, (This took 2 Days) next I was told that they would refund after 10 days (10 Days),then I was told they could not put the money back on my credit card as it was rejected by my bank, but a checque could be issue so I said fine send the cheque, since first speaking to them it has now been a month and still do not have the £199 I paid, all of this is to was time so they can keep all the £199 for as long as they possibly can, while earning interest on your money, and they are getting it right they cannot loose the payment off your card goes off immediately, and I have now waited 30 days for my money back.
  • I was contacted (cold called) on my mobile phone and told they could claim back Payment Protection Insurance and possibly write off my entire mortgage, on a no win no fee basis, but that they would need an initial retainer of £199.99. The salesman – Shane James, was particularly forceful, calling me three times in the space of an hour when I said I would need some time to check they were legitimate before giving them any money. I researched the company on the ministry of justice website, which they said they were licensed by, along with a company search on marketsafe and having satisfied myself they were at least a genuine company, not just a guy with a website, I regret that I did eventually give my card details and pay the money. They sent me a confirmation email (even though I never gave them my email address, so I wondered whether they acquired my number from Microsoft/Hotmail), saying their pack would arrive in 5 working days.

I then received their pack through the post. Their pack included a letter of authority allowing them access to my banking information and a letter to my mortgage lender explaining that they would be attempting to write off the mortgage and recover the PPI.

I have received several letters outlining changes to the T’s and C’s of my mortgage over the course of the 3 years I have had it, Abbey are not stupid and have covered any loopholes there may be and I also believe the PPI would be at most £200, of which they would take 25%. Thus, I convinced myself that this company did not really have much of a case and I could do with the deposit money back. I’m not so affluent that I can just lose £200 and not be bothered. I returned their pack within the 14 day cooling off period, with a letter clearly explaining that I do not believe they have a legitimate case and asking for my deposit back.

I have since phoned them 3 times, the most recent of which today when I was told that they acknowledged the refund when I last called (11/03/2010) but it would take 30 days from that point, not from the point when I initially returned the pack which was approximately 2 weeks previous.

I am extremely annoyed, not only with the company, who seem to be doing anything they can to avoid paying me my money back, but also with myself for allowing them to take money from me in the first place.

    Hi Guy

Yes they are insistent aren't they. I really hope you get this back That guy. If you did want to claim the PPI back, if you think you have been mis sold, then you can do so FREE with the help of this website.

Really hope they pay you back your money soon.

Yet nobody has had their mortgage written off. So, why do they make these things up?

And mortgage PPI is not mis-sold if paid monthly and you are eligible (its loans, credit cards and single premium PPI and ineligibility that is the problem)
but that they would need an initial retainer of £199.99
Well, that is why they make it up. However, surely if its no fee, no win, then why do you have to pay £199.99?

You should report them to the MoJ for a) giving you misleading information about you getting your mortgage written off and b) not handling your cancellation.

The MoJ is finally getting hard on these ambulance chasers and the only way they find out is if people complain.

Is that the email info@claimsregulation.gov.uk that's being banded about on this forum, because I've sent the exact same text from my post on an email to that address.

I just tried another angle, to no avail unfortunately, of phoning my bank and asking them if they can force the money back/cancel the initial transaction on the basis that I believe it to be a scam. Apparently not since it wasn't done on my credit card...

I wasn't actually aware there hadn't been a successful mortgage case but I'm not surprised. Like I said, Abbey have written to me covering loopholes with revised t's&c's each time a new one has been discovered, they're not daft, they don't want to write off mortgages.

In all I feel a bit of an idiot for falling for the whole thing but the salesman was admittedly very good at his job and frankly I'm no good at getting them off the phone. I think the best thing I can do in future is hang up immediately and don't even engage into the conversation.
  • Interesting about the loans.co.uk thing, I've never contacted anyone for a loan, though I've had several offered to me by the banks I've dealt with.

The only thing I can possibly link to it is my car finance agreement with MBNA. Whether it was here or another forum on the subject someone was suggesting there was a link between the two, is this true?

I understand your frustrations with Cento.

When you sent back the pack did you send it my recorded/special delivery?

If you did have you checked that it has been signed for?

In any event you have done what was asked of you and sent back the pack I presume with the 14 days. My advice is to write again by recorded/special delivery advising that the pack was returned and the date and that you have not received your refund which you were entitled to. I would further advise them that unless you receive the money back within 7 days you will be reporting this matter to the Ministry of Justice and contacting your credit card company as they are failing there responsibilities and taking action through the courts.

Please report back here and let us know how you got on.

One large Claims management Company Cartel Client Review had their authorisation suspended last week by the MOJ.

Listen to Moneybox today as well - first item BBC iPlayer - Money Box: 27/03/2010
Well listening Moneybox the MOJ will be closing many more CMC's down over the next few months - so they say, and I wonder who will ne next on the hit list?

The BBC have asked the MOJ that monies that CMC's hold from upfront fees should be held in a client account? one must ask why this has not been done anyway as a matter of routine as the upfront fees was returnable I believe. If you go to a solicitor and give a deposit that money has to be held in a client account. The BBC have also asked that this should be a criteara when they grant a licence.

This being the case each CMC should also hold a OFT licence as they are dealing with client money and this must be held in a separate client account and must be available for refunds when they are asked to make a refund. I believe the MOJ should also make this mandatory when granting a licence.

What the MOJ said in that interview was that anybody who wants a refund must follow proceedure and demand the refund back in the first instance before making any complaints to the MOJ? Therefore, a letter sent by recorded /special delivery should be sent in the first instant.

Once it is apparent after 7 days that no refund is going to be forthcoming then a formal complaint to the MOJ would definately be in order.

At this stage you may have to consider taking the court route depending on the outcome from the letter sent.

This is just my general views on this matter and I would stress that this is aimed at all CMC's not just one particular one.

  • Hello, I paid £149 for this companies services and they told me that within 12 weeks they would be able to settle any claim or give me my money back. I had to send a pack back with all my financial details of previous loans etc along with a cheque for £10 made payable to each lender.

The twelve weeks are up today and I tried to call them on their customer services line. No reply. I called them on their sales line and got an immediate reply!!!

    I think I have just wasted £149.
