Brown the lamb in a couple of tablespoons of olive oil on the hob, in a heavy based, deep roasting tin. Add in a few rashers of streaky bacon, some garlic and some quartered red onions and fry a few mins.

place around the sides, pieces of celeriac, chunks of potato, carrot , parsnip ( all left in fairly large chunks).
Pour in a cheapo bottle of white wine, an equal amount of water, sprinkle in some rosemary, thyme, bayleaves , bring to the boil then cover TIGHTLY with foil and transfer to the preheated oven.
cook at 170c/325f/gas 3 for approx 5-6 hours,
    season to taste

it will fall off the bone - serve meat pulled from the bone with a selection of veg and with fresh crusty bread to mop up the gravy.

taken from a jamie oliver recipe - ive done this more times than i can remember and everyone loves it.
    very rustic, homely, comforting food.

I'm cooking leg of lamb for my lot for Mother's Day too! I'll just do a normal roast, maybe put slivers of garlic into the meat. OH offered to take us all out for a meal, but I prefer my own roast dinners!

Was in lidl last night and got a Leg of Lamb for free that was just about to get thrown out ah the joys of having your wife working there LOL.

Never cooked lamb before and just wondering how you would go about cooking this.

Looked through previous receipies but all seem to be for lamb shanks and shoulders of lamb not sure if it's the same thing LOL.

A recepie in the oven or slow cooker would be great thanks :)

    It's a 2.5kg.

    Thanks

This is my families favorite lamb recipe:
Slice 3 fat cloves of garlic and cut 20 small sprigs of rosemary. Make stabs all over the leg of lamb with the point of a knife and slot a slice of garlic and a sprig of rosemary in each. Put leg of lamb into a large roasting bag with 4 tabsp runny honey, 6 tabsp dark soy sauce and 2 tabsp oyster sauce. Leave to marinate if you have time. I cook in a warm (175C) oven for about 3-4 hours with Jacket potatoes.

You can just roast it. Follow the Garlic/rosemary tip as before and put at 400C. mark 6 for 30mins each 500g +15 mins. Should be fine without the marinade but clearly more special with.

You can get roasting bags in supermarkets and places like Wilcos with the foil and cling film. If it is a large leg, you might want a turkey sized bag. The time I gave earlier cooks the lamb until it just falls off the bone.
