The 'Thanks' button is a great way of acknowledging a good post without needing to reply. In many cases I will press it to say 'I agree' with the advice you have given - kind of second it iyswim.

It must be useful because I really miss it on other forums!

As for the example you have shown Torby, I imagine the thankers are people who have also had/ are having problems starting a thread?
  • sometimes its just nice to thank someone for taking the time to read and contribute to the discussion.
Never regret anything that made you smile ;)

Anybody can "thank" anybody else in here, so using it as a rank method to judge a posters ability to be worthy, is neither here nor there. a "thanks" is merely an acknowledgement of a post (whether or not you agree with it).

The best way to judge other posters ability to be trustworthy is to read their previous post history, but dont rely on high posts or thank ratings.

Indeed a lot of newcomers post just as useful and meaningful posts as the regulars do, its all a case of being polite, helpful and honest to each other to be recognised as a respectable user.

Remember all the regulars (no matter how high ranking) all started off as newcomers. :D

I've accidentally clicked "thanks" instead of "quote" a couple of times. .
I've done that a few times as well! It's particularly annoying if I'm about about to debate the point with them- d'oh!

Wow Quasar, your post count is crazy, at a quick calculation that’s the equivalent of approx, 50 posts a day, every day for the last 4 years, you deserve some sort of official recognition for services to MSE, are you aware of anyone on here with a higher post count or are you officially the highest poster on mse.?

The highest, alas, the highest. But many of these posts are trivial one liners in the arms, and it's easy to knock 30 or 40 in one hour. ;)
Contrary to popular belief, I do have a life, and a job that takes me out and about round London most days. :)

LOL Nope. My lappy never leaves my home. ;)
Ok I take the very old one (10 years old) around to do reports etc but it's no longer set for interenet connection - I'd only get tempted to long on to... guess where? :D :rotfl:
