I've accidentally clicked "thanks" instead of "quote" a couple of times. Some people are sad enough to thank themselves as somebody else though. It's bound to happen. No idea why. (I'm off to thank myself...).The View Belongs To Everyone0

not only that, but sadly, no one offered him any assistance either...yet they thanked himI'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

The thanks button is merely acknowledgement, nothing more, its got zero to do with stats.
I thank people just to say "hello" sometimes, some posts I thank, some I dont, but for no particular reason. If a poster has exelled his or herself to helping me solve an issue for example, i am more inclined to post a reply of acknowledgement including the word "thank you".
Some people make a song and dance about who thanks who in a thread, which is really quite petty and completely irrelevant to the thread.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

acknowledgement of what though...especially in the link above?
if the "stats" mean nothing....why have them...I thought it was an indication of how good some members on here are when it comes to helping others...obviously not seeing what other posters have said in this thread...to me it was an indication of a "worthwhile member", i.e. one that offers help and assistance, or posts something relevant and useful...if not?...whats the point of the facility and why call it "thanks"
strangely enough though....no one yet has addressed the type of scenario I have highlighted and there are many more on the forum...If the stats mean nothing...why post "thanks"...and if the "thanks" button is hit for no real or apparent reason...other than to hope for a reciprocal vote...the whole system is a sham....
blimey its as clear as MPs expenses....I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

i think some people on MSE do think of the thanks to post count ratio as being a bit like ebay feedback but it means nothing in reality in terms of judging the value of a persons opinion.
For example i have witnessed several little groups on different boards from the loans boards to the debate boards to the ebay boards that seem to do nothing but post sarcastic and sometimes offensive comments about other users, yet they still have high "thanks" rates, mainly because their cohorts will hit the thanks button every time they post an insult, so in these cases all the high post count means is they have posted a lot of insults.
Not exactly a reliable indication as to whether or not you should listen to their advice.
I do however think people see a high thanks rate as a status symbol on the boards and that is why they will use alter ego's, or thank every post they see in hope of a reciprocal thanks but for me, i couldn't be bothered to be honest, i'll take what comes my way and settle for it, can't be bothered to chase "thanks" from other users, seems like a massive waste of time to me.0
