Hi all, I hit the thanks button if I found something relevant, something that made me laugh or just to say 'hello' - but I am fast becoming a very sad MSE addict. :beer:Slightly bitter0

The highest, alas, the highest. But many of these posts are trivial one liners in the arms, and it's easy to knock 30 or 40 in one hour.
Contrary to popular belief, I do have a life, and a job that takes me out and about round London most days.
Well, i aint knockin you for your post count, just is undoubtedly something to be marvelled, might pop by the arms and give you a run for your money...... only 67,500 posts or there abouts to catch up, i'm gonna go brush up my one liners....see you in the arms.:D0 -
I use the thank button as a quide so I know where I am on a thread, also as a means of saying hello to those on my regular threads.
I really don't think it is a status thingy, as in who can get the most thank posts. Although I must admit it is quiet interesting to see who has got a lot of thanks and who hasn't..Eeeps does that make me a sad person..lol

I do this from time to time, but only if I have a good reason: I don't believe in devaluing such facilities.
Sometimes I see an entry which makes a very good point, is very well expressed or has some useful information or a tip that might be useful to me, so I thank them.
I also thank people who have replied constructively to my threads.
It does seem that people are graded for quantity rather than quality on here!Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

The 'Thanks' button is a great way of acknowledging a good post without needing to reply. In many cases I will press it to say 'I agree' with the advice you have given - kind of second it iyswim.
I agree with you bestpud! That's the main reason for me using the "thanks" button... basically, so I don't have to quote and say "I agree".

I thank anyone whose taken time to reply to a thread I start, I thnk people who have said somehing useful, something I am in accord with or anything that made me see a different perspective.
I also tend to thank things I disagre with but quote o debate in the Debate/discussion forums. Its seems an appropriate less formal equivalent to ''proper'' formal debate.
I don't think the thanks can be over done: its not rationed out, and I'll even often thank something again with the word in my reply if I feel extra thanks thn a push of button implies, is warrented.0 -
i think some people on MSE do think of the thanks to post count ratio as being a bit like ebay feedback but it means nothing in reality in terms of judging the value of a persons opinion.
For example i have witnessed several little groups on different boards from the loans boards to the debate boards to the ebay boards that seem to do nothing but post sarcastic and sometimes offensive comments about other users, yet they still have high "thanks" rates, mainly because their cohorts will hit the thanks button every time they post an insult, so in these cases all the high post count means is they have posted a lot of insults.
Not exactly a reliable indication as to whether or not you should listen to their advice.
I do however think people see a high thanks rate as a status symbol on the boards and that is why they will use alter ego's, or thank every post they see in hope of a reciprocal thanks but for me, i couldn't be bothered to be honest, i'll take what comes my way and settle for it, can't be bothered to chase "thanks" from other users, seems like a massive waste of time to me.
Agree absolutely Cyril, they then bluster that they are 'well respected regulars' because look how many thanks votes they have got. Have a look at the thread started by Matt on here asking mods to sort things out. 7 of them immediately jump on the next post disagreeing with him and press the thanks button. Really funny:laugh:
And they waste pages and pages of threads saying they love each other and blowing kisses and stuff but accuse advice askers of wanting luv n hugs and fluffiness, not advice. Beginning to wonder if one or two or three of them are the same person."All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)
