some members seem to add "thanks" to a post whether it has any relevance or not, in as I suspect, an attempt to receive a reciprocal "thanks" to inflate their own stats?
Now I suppose if you agree....you may not feel you should click the "thanks" button...but then again...if you did agree...this has been a worthwhile post...

Users have different reasons for thanking depending on which area of the MSE forum you are in. For example, actually thanking for advice in the benefits threads; marking competition threads as entered; and acknowledging a mate's remark in the Arms.
tbh, I really don't care how many Thanks I have. (says she, noticing that she hit 15000 thanks at the same time as this post!):heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Tigsteroonie...thanks for that...but this is the type of thing I mean...and its obviously not the posters intention to generate "thanks"...just makes me wonder about the motivation for "thanking"...

I think on some boards or threads it is almost just something that people have got into the habit of automatically doing.
Read post = click thanks button........... if you see what I mean.
I think the answer is to not put much store in thanks. It is just a bit of fun rather than anything else.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Well, some of them will have clicked thanks by accident, and some of them will have clicked all posts just to show how far they'd got in reading the thread. That's my guess, anyway.Signature removed for peace of mind0

I thank people who have either helped me or someone else, or who have, imo made a constructive contribution to a discussion. Why would anyone give a toss about how many 'thanks' they had accumulated? Unless there is a prize for the greatest number which I don't know about..?If you will the end, you must will the means.0

I'll thank anyone who has took the time to respond to any of my threads- well unless they're being rude I will!Present yourself, press your clothes, comb your hair, clock in

the practise of using "alter Egos" on MSE is something that has recently been brought to my attention but since being made aware of it i have noticed several people who seem to always get a "thanks" no matter what they post, and strangely it's usually from the same person, who never actually seems to post anything themselves, or thank anyone else.
I have suspected that this is just an attempt to boost their own stats by posting as many comments as they can, relevant or irrelevant then logging in under their "alter ego" and thanking all the posts.
I'm pretty sure that's happening, though while a tad strange, it doesn't hurt me so what the heck....let em get on with it.0 -

Why would they want to 'boost their stats' though? I've never noticed the stats myself. Who would care?
