What is meant by 'missing the boat'

It's derived from the Greek - mistres botus. The expression was used to describe slaves released from their bondage - this might happen after long service, or a good deed performed, or occasionally by certain other 'services' offered. The slavery system was built around impossible to service debts, keeping the slaves forever trying to pay back their masters.
This is why mistres botus, changed through the ages to "missing the boat", is mistakenly used by the insanely indebted to describe those fortunate modern souls who have avoided the folly of enslaving themselves voluntarily to an impossible to service mortgage.
You forgot to mention Rentus Maximus. This is derived from Latin. It was an expression used to describe slaves who were condemned to pay a monthly amount in perpetuity to their landlord masters. In return they could be thrown out on the streets at their masters will and were forced to pay this monthly amount even when they received only a pension. Furthermore, they were also condemed to a life of monotonous repetition of the phrase "House Prices will be 70% off this time next year Rodney"............0 -
We missed a particular boat in 2003, but I'm rather glad we did, as subsequent events would have made our journey pretty rough.
There is more to life than jumping on the next boat, before it disappears over the horizon. Not every boat is going to a nice place, and some are distinctly un-seaworthy.
Choose your boat with care. The price of a ticket is not the only thing to consider.0 -
We seem to have gone overboard with the puns on this thread, clear danger that Misskool will decide to scuttle it. It's a favoured expression of the jolly sailors who declare full steam ahead at every opportunity, who seem unaware of the coming storm and dangerous undercurrents.
Fortunately for the drunken tars, the government seems determined to throw them a lifebelt at every opportunity, but even they can't bail out every sinking (ed: shurely stinking?) seaman.
ps. Chucky - I have no supporting facts or graphs for the above so apologies for that.0 -

Looks like someof you guys will be needing to get some bits of wood and build a temporary raft, as the boat appears to be departing .... and you haven't got your tickets .... shame ....
You know Kenny even though I don't see eye to eye with you on the issues of the day, I would respect that if you are not lying about your BTL's and business acumen, that you have a reasonable amount of intelligence, yet this comment above is giving me serious doubts.
Are you seriously saying that the Nationwide figure the other day is the bottom of the market, all I can say is you're on the boat on your own as even the other bulls (Stevie, chucky, Dan etc..) would seriously doubt that we are in for a glorious period of HPI. On the other hand your comment may have just been patronising crap. Either way, it's not a good look.0 -
The boat will be hanging around for years trying to get enough passangers dumb enough to buy tickets, probably rusted and sunk with barnacles on its bottom by then:D0

I think boat is overstating it. It's actually a pedalo with Chucky, Pickles and Kenny hanging on, bright red faces and Speedos, pedalling for all their worth despite reports of an incoming tsunami. "No it's OK Chucky.. er.. I'll wait for the next one mate"0

Whoops! Chucky just fell off, but Kenny's grabbed the back of his Speedo's - oh - you don't want to know the rest.0

The issue with the 'missing the boat' idea is that both the bulls an the bears have.
The bears missed the massive HPI, while the bulls 'missed the boat' on selling before the massive HPC.
Hence, it makes almost everyone look like a twonk.0
