What is meant by 'missing the boat'

In the last crash prices stagnated for a period of years and when HPI finally did raise its ugly head, it was very mild for 3-4 years.
we've discussed this before and i don't know what house prices will be coming out of the recession.
you're right about the last recession - however the two previous ones saw a short period of stagnation. the early 80s recession had return to peak prices in 22 months.
The one in the mid-70s was similar but a bit longer.
it's up to you which you think will apply in the next few years.0 -

There is no boat.0

Well having done a few boom and busts, imho there is loads of time, tons of it. I for one think there is a long way to go yet before we hit the bottom, 2 years, 3 years, I really don`t know.
As for some nonsense talked about on here about missing the boat, stuff and nonsense.0 -
As a child I travelled a lot alone, with a card around my neck holding the hand of air stewardessess. Missing the plane was a big deal and my parents: who hadn't travelled so much in their childhoods as I, certainly not with anything like the frequency: being on time was a VERY big deal. we were normally there at least an hour early. All that time wasted in airports, tense and grumpy and a little bored, what a pity.
When we were planning our return to UK from Italy we had to time things reasonably efficiently: to hit UK at the right time for our animals' paperwork to be valid and drive up from Italy. I rememebr getting into the sort of time sensitve planning my parents would have and DH kept telling me to relax: that we'd be fine . I asked what happens if we miss our channel tunnel train. He said, quite simply: we get the next one. A bit worng footed by the simplicity of this alternative plan I asked what happened if we missed by a massive amount that saw us having to re treat and paper work the animals and staying 24 hours near the tunnel french side. DH said: we take the pets to a vet and find nice hotel.
The simplicity of not having to do things by an expected ferry schedule has frankly been very enlightening and I no longer, ever fear missing the boat. As DHs says, there is a next one (or a different method of transport).
I'm quite happy now, to miss the boat. I've never even particularly liked boats.
ETA; we actually arrived ahead of schedule, but with the timing that allowed us to enter uk.....just a the very first moment of our 24 hour window. We got an earlier train.0 -
As for your your 'boat/ferry quote', I understand that, as I catch ferries quite often, you generally have a 45 min check in tolerance, now that is a boat that can easily be missed I grant you, but if the boat is in dock for 5 years+, I'd be very surprised that anyone who is capable of catching it, can't get on.
I understand what you are getting at here Ad. House prices have been dropping for quite sometime now and I too believe they have some way to fall yet. If the bottom could be predicted, I am sure it (the bottom) would be around for a while and not a fleeting moment where if someone wasn't quick enough could miss the boat. I believe the 'boat' will be in dock for a 'refit' before its fit to sail again, there's plenty time for people to buy a house at the bottom price whenever that present's itself.IMO FWIW0 -
Looks like someof you guys will be needing to get some bits of wood and build a temporary raft, as the boat appears to be departing .... and you haven't got your tickets .... shame ....0

a boat is a risky place to be on when it springs a leak and there is no dry land in sightbubblesmoney :hello:0
