Anyone else had an email from coop saying that they are sending you a card reader so that you can use it for online purchases? Plus they also said I would need to use the card reader for some parts of my online banking service too??

    this is what I got..........

Banking online is quick, easy and convenient. In addition to this, The Co-operative Bank is making it even more secure because we are introducing a Chip and PIN Card Reader (Card Reader).
The Card Reader is similar to the Chip and PIN machines used in shops and restaurants and like these, it is designed to provide an extra level of protection and security, to help safeguard you against fraud when banking online.

    Enhancing your security

The Card Reader is a small, easy-to-use device which works separately from your computer. There are no wires or plugs and you don't need to install any additional software. Always ensure your Card Reader is safe and keep it within easy reach whenever you need to manage your Co-operative Bank account online.
Before you use your Card Reader for the first time you will need to activate it by inserting your debit card into your Card Reader, selecting the identify button, entering your PIN number and pressing OK. This is simply to activate your Card Reader and no transaction will be processed.

You do not have to use your Card Reader for all online banking transactions, but you may need to use it when you want to:
    • set up or amend standing orders, set up, amend or make bill payments
    • set up, amend or make funds transfers.
You can use your Card Reader to carry out transactions online in three simple steps:
    • log on to our internet banking service in the usual way, insert your debit card into the Card Reader
    • follow the on-screen instructions.

I got one of these when I opened my account with the co-op in April. I've never used it - my sister got one from Barclays last year and finds its a pain in the rear. I was also worried if I was ever away from home I wouldn't be able to carry out internet banking without the gizmo. I might be wrong and just a little technophobic :o:o:o

Well my card is due for renewal in October, although this isn't my main account. As soon as I was discharged I applied for a Yorkshire Bank ''Readycash account'' as you get a proper Maestro card and excellent online banking. For instance if you use your card online or have been out shopping it shows up immediately.
I do like the co op for their ethical policies though.
How easy is it to apply.
I looked online an my nearest branch is in central london, I live next to gatwick airport!

    You can apply by phone.

You rarely need to go into the branch.
Cash can be paid in at any post office using the debit card.
Cheques can be send to co-op to be paid in, or again through the post office in special envelopes provided.

You should only need the PIN device to setup payments or make amendments - so once you have someone setup, you'll be able to make payments without using the device.

Barclays require you to use the device in the same way although they also require it to log on - which is a right pain (particularly for me as I use First Direct to log in to all my accounts). You can log in using card details (if you don't have the device with you) but it only offers limited banking.

Only thing I found out the other day is that I can use the Barclays device with my Natwest card and vice versa. Not sure if the same will be true on the Co-operative device though.

I've had to use it every time i want to make a payment! My sister lent me 40 quid to pay for my food shopping as i had forgot my card and i was going to transfer it over to her when we got to my mums but it wouldn't let me without the reader so i had to wait till i got home which was a pain as my sister needed the money then!

Interestingly enough i was in Aldi yesterday and made a purchase using my "4508 Visa Debit-Electron" card, when asked to put my card in the machine the screen displayed "VISA DEBIT", what i dont know is if my electron card displays as electron or not.
:grouphug: hehe it always makes me chuckle

When you set up a payment, there is a check option which means you don't need to enter PINsentry again for the same payee.

I think my Co-op Electron used to just show up as VISA.
