  • Hi folks, I was just wondering what size of nappies do you use in your nappy cakes? And also what do you use in the middle of the cake to hold it all together. For the first cake I've done I used a mixture of size 2s and size 3s, as this was nappies I already had but wasnt sure if this was best. I found a bottle and teat brush set in asda that was the perfect size for the middle of the cake as it was in a plastic tube but I've noticed they don't sell them anymore. It would have been too big for a 2 tier cake aswell x

I dont use anything in the centre tier, although alot of the nappy cakers on here use cardboard tubes!

  • Hi Nikifife

I use comb and brush sets in the middle of my base layer, they come in clear plastic tubes which are just the perfect size for me.

    Hi nikifife!

I use size 2 Newborn Nappies but am thinking of going over to size 3.

I use a stiff paper tube in the middle of my cakes. It makes it harder to build this way as you have to build around the tube rather than popping each "round" one on top of the other. I have always made them this way and am used to it.

I think most people don't use anything to hold them together and just rely on the wrapping.
  • Hi all

Just a quick question..... For those of you who have websites, have you had your pictures on your websites taken professionally or have you taken them yourself. I am trying to take mine myself to save money, but cant seem to get the lighting right. I dont want them to look rubbish as I know when I look at websites and think the pics look rubbish I go elsewhere!!
p.s. doing my first sale on Friday night - very nervous and got loads to do. Its a charity night so not expecting to sell too much but just hope people are nice about my cakes ....

    Hi
I use size 3 nappies (Pampers or Huggies). I use a small (200g) Johnsons talc to attach the bottom tier to the middle tier but then I just sit the top tier on. It doesn't seem to move!

    Hi
Bit of both for me, I had some taken by a friend who is a photographer and some I have taken myself, try to take them in natural light without using flash, I have a link to a tutorial on my facebook page if you want to have a look, gives some good practical advice..... hope the sale goes ok on Friday :)

    Hello everyone,

I have made a couple of new nappy cakes after having received my order from Pumpkin Patch....it is such lovely stuff!!!

    DSCF2555.jpg

This first one is my first 4 tier cake. It cost 21 pounds 21p to make!!! It contains 101 nappies (!), a white fleece blanket, a bib, 2 muslin cloths and then a hat and booties. If I were to sell this (I've made a pink one and a blue one for my expectant sister in law so i'll sell the other one) do you think i could charge 40? The contents are worth that but I got everything on special!

    DSCF2553.jpg

The pink one contains about 45 nappies, a blanket, a onesie, 2 muslin cloths, a hat and a knitted bunny! Cost about 16.20.

Lovely cakes, and yes I would definitely charge at least £40, if not more. Don't forget, people don't know that you buy things on special offer, and it's not just about the cost of the products. You need to factor in your time and skill of putting it all together.

I think that I undercharge people sometimes, but I am just starting out so need to sell as many as I can to get my money back that I spent on stock (and it's a lot!!) before I can get into profit.
