    Hi all

This is my 1st post on this board.

My brother's girlfriend is pregnant and I would like to make them a nappy cake but have no idea what I should buy to make it look good (I have never made one before).

Do I have to use the smallest nappies? or are bigger ones easier to use? Also, how do they stay standing up when they are made? What should I use to keep the layers together?

Sorry for all the questions. I just want to get it right. The baby is not due until later in the year so I have a few months to practise.

    Mnay thanks for any advice

    Hi Mel,

I use size 3 nappies in mine and have recently switched to huggies activedry I think as they are quite plain. I found it better as alot of babies are very large these days (a friend just had her first at 9lb 11oz!) and also lots of people don't want to take them apart immediately.
I also now use the swirling method rather than rolling the nappies, I think it keeps the nappies nicer and it is massively easier and quicker. I start with something round so a bottle or something. I then swirl 6 nappies at a time. I lay 6 nappies out on the table in a line up and down , staggered towards me if that makes sense. Then you take your bottle and lay it on the closest nappy and roll the bottle gathering the nappies as you roll away from you. I secur this with a band and repeat with another 6 and so on until I have the right size tier. It does mean that your bottle will more than likely not be in the centre of your tier but I have found this doesn't matter. I don't use anything taller than nappies so it doesn't go in more than 1 tier. Then I just stack the individual tiers. It sounds complicated but I can get the basic 3 tier done in this way in about 5 minutes!

Not nappy cake but couldn't resist posting my first towel cake. I've made it for my cousin who's getting married. It's got 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 4 face cloths in.

What lovely cakes everyone is making, I would really like to have a go. Might have a try at a towel cake for a birthday present, as no one I know is having a baby.

I was looking at the baby towels and blankets in Asda yesterday, and found a pram cotton cellular blanket for £4, not in the usual baby place but with the bedding. It looked really nice quality.

I bought some of those blankets too - they're actually 2 for £6 which makes them quite a bargain. Asda also do fleece blankets for £2, they come in cream and brown and are the exact same fleece quality at the ones in the baby section only larger. I guess anyone who's handy with a sewing machine could cut them in half and make two baby blankets out of the one fleece - total cost of £1 per blanket (except you would have to finish the edges somehow)
