    Hi Mel,

I use size 3 nappies in mine and have recently switched to huggies activedry I think as they are quite plain. I found it better as alot of babies are very large these days (a friend just had her first at 9lb 11oz!) and also lots of people don't want to take them apart immediately.
I also now use the swirling method rather than rolling the nappies, I think it keeps the nappies nicer and it is massively easier and quicker. I start with something round so a bottle or something. I then swirl 6 nappies at a time. I lay 6 nappies out on the table in a line up and down , staggered towards me if that makes sense. Then you take your bottle and lay it on the closest nappy and roll the bottle gathering the nappies as you roll away from you. I secur this with a band and repeat with another 6 and so on until I have the right size tier. It does mean that your bottle will more than likely not be in the centre of your tier but I have found this doesn't matter. I don't use anything taller than nappies so it doesn't go in more than 1 tier. Then I just stack the individual tiers. It sounds complicated but I can get the basic 3 tier done in this way in about 5 minutes!

Do you find you use more nappies by using this method?

I actually find i use less nappies using the swirl method. I always swirl for single tiers and roll for 3 tiers as it makes it a bit taller i think, and i can hide clothes inside where you can't if it's swirled.

I made lots of great contacts at my last craft fair. Sold some suff but not lots got an order for a cake which was good. i made back the stall money and a little spending money for me too. But it's the contacts that were most worth while. Got a 3 day craft fair booked now! I will be shattered as you have to take down your stall after each day.

I use about the same. Usually appx 30 for a 3 tier.

Mine are the same height whether I roll or swirl as the nappies are the same height rolled or swirled. I just find it is really really easy and far less time consuming than rolling. If I'm doing a cake without anything in it then I will roll one nappy to swirl around.

Hi all, thought I would come on and post a couple of pics. A christening cake which I had ordered a couple of weeks ago. I have another christening cake which I made last week for a friend of ours but OH has the pic and he aint in at the mo so that one is to follow. Best bit is that they have 3 girls, so I made a nappy cake for the baby and 2 small towel cakes for the older girls (Age 3 and 5) and they all went down a storm, I have had several orders from it coming in the next couple of weeks and even the bar staff at where the christening was held have asked for contact details :)

30 nappies for all three tiers? I must be doing something wrong then as I use double that in a three tier cake

Wow Rusty, that is beautiful. Love the toy. I am sure you'll get plenty of orders after seeing this x
A creative mess is better than tidy idleness :D
  • Rusty Flange - that cake is lovely. Like the idea of a toy on top for a christening cake :D

Thanks ladies :D The top didn't look as messy once wrapped, I re did the folding etc. Believe it or not there is 3 x sleveless Tshirts, 1 shirt, 1 tank top and 6 pairs of socks inside the cake! not sure how I managed to get nappies inside aswell. It looked a lot better in real life! Will try and sort the pictures out for the other cake I did and also the 2 mini towel cakes :)
