One of my favourites is mozerella cut into slices, arranged on plate with slices of large beef tomotoes, drizzled in olive oil and black pepper with a few black olives.

Takes 5 mins, and with aldi selling mozerella for 49p at the moment its so cheap too!

:j Hi! just wondering if anyone has any ideas for a starter that I could make for
    6 adults, one fussy toddler and a non-fussy 17 month old? :o
I always make leek and potato soup which is my speciality(in other words) what I always make!!But I would like to make something different.
My Mum is making beef and y pud etc. for main course, and my sis is making pavlova. :T
Probably something without too many "visible" vegetables.(and that's only for the 37 year old BIL!) :rotfl:
Fill me with your wisdom folks!!!! :T

A quick search shows a few threads on starters, and the one most likely to help is is this one below, but there are others you might like to browse too.

  • Hi

There are loads of lovely starters but I would stick with what you know:D Maybe make some rustic granary rolls to go with it and HM butter, or place some toasted cheese on top for a variant:confused:

Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding is a fabulous main dish and Ive always found a starter to accompany this apart from soup or melon difficult to find. You dont want anything to heavy or filling or something with alot of flavour to spoil the taste of the beef IYSWIM.

Pavlova is a lovely light pudding and goes down well with most meals.

How about buying some nice coffee for after the meal? Or making some HM horseradish sauce?

Your menu does sound delicious though. Enjoy!!

Thanks PP! You talk a lot of sense! Everybody likes my leek and potato soup and I'm working on Saturday and don't have much time with 2 wee ones!
I will try the rolls and the cheese, sounds great!

    Hiya,
After reading some of the threads about "cheap" dating etc, I've taken a leaf out of a previous poster's book and decided I'm going to do a nice 3 course meal for Valentine's Day. Told OH he'll have to dress up for the occasion too!

Anyway, I'm going to cook his favourite - chicken wrapped in bacon in BBQ sauce (cheese on top) with roast spuds and various veg.

I'm currently racking my brains trying to think of a nice starter, and any side dishes for the main meal - can anyone recommend nice veg/anything else to go with it?

Needs to be a light starter as OH doesn't have a huge appetite (lucky thing!) - no prawn cocktails!! ;)

Any advice oh wise OS peeps? :)

clear soup (won't fill him up too much before the main course) no bread rolls though.

slice of melon with ginger (get the juices flowing)

or asparagus (not sure whether you can get hold of any this time of year?)

er.....can't think of anything else (hubby loves prawns and I love avocado so guess what we're having:p )

How about Melon & Palma ham, or melon balls in Port? Both very light and refreshing! :)
Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.
