Not doing very well this time
    April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 250
  • Mrs M could I change to a yearly total of £1250 running from last Jan to December 2009. Food money here is a bit mixed up as we have a couple of extra house guests and monthly money will be up and down. May have to change back if I find I am spending too much but this should be easier to manange in the end.
    Good luck to everyone
Thanks to Mrs M and all the people who keep this together.
Challenge 2 adults food and household.

Just thought I would pop in and show some support for everyone. The grocery challenge is great, I'm thoroughly enjoying trying to keep on target, despite being way over the half yearly mark on my overall annual budget. Home grown veggies will make an amazing difference to spends, I hope, and I'm now starting to see edible 'stuff' in the hedgerows. Last night, we tried elderflower fritters and today, I'm going to make elderflower pancakes with the remainder of the sweet batter thickened using self-raising [STRIKE]flower[/STRIKE] flour :o. I guess you could pretty much add the flowers to anything. Elderflower champagne my next frugal food attempt, I just need strong bottles. :)

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer sun and preparing for next week's heatwave, if it arrives.
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

I have no idea how much to set my budget for..... I first started doing the grocery challenge late last year and was certainly shocked the first month (October) when I added up every single receipt to get an idea how much I was spending and it was £600 plus..... Each month i set a target and each month I overspent and it wasnt by just a few pounds...

I am amazed at how little some of your budgets are. How do you do it?

I know where I am going wrong to some extent in that rather than make a real effort to use just what I have, I decide I want "x" for tea and that promptly gets bought and munched (along no doubt with other items that sneak into the basket) The other day I ended up throwing away various items from my fruit/veg drawer at the bottom of my fridge as it had all gone off  bad planning or buying in bulk because that appears the best offer at the time but it clearly isnt because it ends up being thrown away.

I said in a previous post that I was going to transfer my grocery money into a separate bank account as previously my grocery money was getting confused with my personal money and I had no idea how much was getting spent on food. At least now I can keep a proper track of what is being spent. I am also once this week is done with, going to plan menus because I can then shop accordingly.

I have decided that I will set my budget for July at £275 although I will aim to spend no more than £200..... (the extra £75) being my safety net.

NYK- I'm having a rethink of my meal plan for next week because of the heatwave that we might be going to have.

Mrs M- I'm declaring £165.56p for June, £5.56p over budget but I'm not going to beat my self up over it, I will try harder with Julys GC.

I'm going to MrT's soon to pick up some salad bits for tonight and other bits that should:rolleyes: see us through until Friday.

I hope everyone has a nice day and makes the most of the sunny weather.

    Hello everyone

Not been around at all this month and it's definitely showing on the old bank balance.

Still trying to get MIL out of her shambles of a financial life and it's taking its toll. Have been buying her some groceries as well as our own (including cigarettes:mad:). Have also ended up using cash too as we swap monies from bank account to bank account so that's notoriously difficult to keep track of. I spent about £17 in the butcher's last weekend and would you believe I put the lot in the freezer and bought "easier" stuff to eat.:o

The above paragraph is my feeble attempt to say I'm drawing a line under June as a (probable) failure but by how much who knows:confused:

Therefore, Mrs M, HUGE ??? on June and £380 again for July

Thanks everyone. Have a good Sunday.

I'm not positive how I did this month as I was a bit lax about keeping track. Still I'm fairly sure I went over budget but about £10. Which is not as bad as it could have been but not as good as it should have been!
    Mortgage (original/ current):193,000 (23/09/11)/ £102,500 (07/11/2019)
