    Good on you bills.

It's usual that one's earning power increases as you get older. I'm 45. When I was 24 I earned a grand total of zero. My first proper salary at age 25 was as a journo in London earning £8500 a year. I didn't really start my 'earning career' until my mid-30s and I didn't hit good money until around three years ago.

I would love to be swanning around in a lower paid job that I love - I would love to go back to journalism, for example - but for those of us not born into wealthy backgrounds (ahem), we have to make compromises.

Yep I have grande plans to be earning a better salary by I am 30 oddish lol Im working on it . But for now I have me two jobs which pay the bills and give me a little money for play time and shopping! :D

Oh yer forgot to mention i do bar work as well in a lovely local pub with lots of ace characters! Its an extra £200 a month, but i don't really see it as a job more of a socialise, only I get to watch everyone else behaving silly and not me showing myself up! hahaha!
  • This has got way out of hand! I have read the whole of this thread and actually it's inspiring.. there are jobs on here I never knew existed, it's given me ideas on where to take my career path.

Why can't everyone take it for what it is.. information sharing, maybe to motivate others to change career, push for promotion or whatever... it's not a boasting exercise how can it be when everyone is anonymous!

Me... I worked as a PA/administrator on 21k in a mobile phone call centre but took voluntary redundancy 2 months ago. Paid off all my debts, volunteered in an orphanage in Africa for 8 weeks and now I'm back and on the job hunt!

  • We need more people like Bendix giving the country £3000k per month in tax.

Would help pay for a better NHS, schools, police and all the other services people think are paid for by the government from the magic money tree.

I think it's convenient for management if staff don't discuss salaries, in case people find out that colleagues are earning more than them, and then want a pay rise.

Personally I think it's healthy to discuss salaries, that this is an interesting thread, and that people shouldn't be criticising others for doing exactly what the title is asking them to do!

    I completely and utterly agree!!!

It is very convinient for the "born rich" people like Patchwork Cat:rotfl:(just a joke) not to talk about money, because then they don't have to pay their slaves too much..:rotfl::rotfl:

    Just a joke people..;)
  • I'm a construction estimator - age 28 @ £24k.
I should be on a LOT more, at least equal to my male counterparts! I'm in a 'safe' rut now, I'd love to go in a new direction but its not wise to move at the moment!! I could of got a lot more if i'd moved a year or two ago but then I had a baby!

On the other side of the scale my XH does exactly the same but has job hopped his way to £50k a year with a car allowance and approx 5k bonus a year. Nice if you can get it!

    Perks -
Occasional treats from clients, races, hotel stays, tickets to footy matches etc - though why they all insist on ManU games is beyond me!
If I was a bloke (or knew how to play) I'd be playing golf a lot!
Xmas is always good for chocolates and masses of wine from suppliers!

  • I'm a Site Controller in the retail/transport industry ....23.5k a year plus night shift allowance of 3.5k.

We at work have just had all our contracts changed due to restrcturing so we are all on a level playing field ( everyone gets paid the same)...very happy with my job ....i actually enjoy going to work, and theres not many people who can say that.
    Come on Ilson ....:footie:
  • 48y old- project leader for a London based construction firm (chartered civil engineer)- £90K + 9% pension contribution, £8K car allowance pa, free mobile phone, private healthcare, sick pay, 35days holiday + bonus around 10K pa

    my girlfriend:
33y - project manager for construction firm in London (architect from studies)- £63K+ 9% pension, company car, free fuel, free mobile phone, private healthcare insurance, sick pay, 35 days holiday, she works from home regularly, free internet at home, bonus; last year £3K

    We feel very content

Yes, we met at work :-) - no, she doesn't work for me. Same company- different departments and different directors we report to.

We are very fortunate with our jobs. I started my career standing in the mud taking measurements on building sites, my girlfriend started as a CAD monkey (computer drawing) on 22K. We managed to work ourselves up the career ladder by specialising in a certain discipline each and having taken advantage of the good times where a bit of job hopping moved our salaries upwards. The biggest salary jump was when I got headhunted 10y ago and similar for my girlfriend when she was approached by this company 4years ago.

My tip: Get yourself known within your industry and never burn bridges when you leave a project or company.

Biggest bonus for me ever: meeting her in the office!!

I'm working to retire before I'm 50. That means making hay while the sunshines. My choice, of course, and I'm fine with sacrificing these next few years for the right end.

I've read your posts and have a lot in common. I'm also from a very poor single parent family and worked my way up from washing pots in a kitchen as a student to £8k pa in first job to now earning good money like yourself. I'm in my late 30s and I am extremely careful with money as firstly I have been very poor so I truly understand the value of it, secondly because I have two young children and want to secure their future and thirdly because I plan to retire in my early 50s. I apologise to nobody for earning what I do and the attacks on you for listing your wage on an open public thread that asks people to do so are pathetic.

And by the way in my view anything between £80k to £150k is not, in my opinion, some kind of huge fat cat salary. Its quite a normal salary for professionals such as doctors, lawyers, accountants. Most of my similarly qualified professional friends earn salaries in that range. The real fat cats are the investment bankers, hedge fund managers of this world. I have an investment banker friend who aged 32 earned £1.8m with his bonus last year. I have another friend who set up his own hedge fund and he takes £1.5m per year for doing very little indeed. Don't criticize the hardworking professionals who have clawed their way up to a salary that many in the square mile would regard as a pittance!
