We're so precious here in the west. People say it's unpolite to discuss earnings, but I've never heard a good reason why, except some harking back to a Victorian sense of proprietary.
Well i presume its because if i were to hark on about how much we earn to someone who earns a lot less ,they would assume i was bragging .
Hubby retrained a few years ago to change career and someone where we used to live outright asked us how much he earned in his new job ,I was so shocked at her nosiness but she pointed out her hubby might be looking at changing to the same job so was interested ,I told her and she blurted out he earns more a day than she gets in a week and that wasn't fair, they never spoke to us again and other people in the area became very 'off'
Have you even seen the harry enfield character is the Spanish bar ? cant remember the character name but his catch phrase was 'Couldn't help notice that we're considerably richer than you ' that's what i think of whenever i hear people discussing earnings..sorry cant help it :rotfl:0 -
If I was rich, skittish, I wouldn't be spending my life making a living.0

To discuss pay can cause enormous friction in the private sector, I remember an incident when I was in my early twenties where there was a very nasty incident between half a dozen members of staff doing essentially the same job with different pay - infact there were a couple of written warnings given out.
My knowledge of Asia is that they have quite a different culture to this country, for example in Japan it is rude to not accept an alcoholic drink when offered even though about half the population has a very low tolerance to alcohol
I feel that it is undiplomatic to enter a salary that is so clearly higher than the average of the thread.
It has been said that maybe I am motivated by jealousy whereas in fact that is not the case, as if you know anything about my background you will realise that I come from a very wealthy background, but have decided that there are more important things in life and I am a SAHM.0 -

Help! The MS police is here, throwing out all the undesirables!
But seriously.....
Not everyone is able to achieve £150k in their life, some have the odds stacked against them. It will require much less effort to earn £150k if you come from a family already earning that much.
Saying that, I totally agree that it's silly to complain if people post their salary here. If you don't want to hear that some people earn ridiculous salaries then don't read this thread!
MS is an open forum, some of its sections are very clearly more appealing to people who have a bob or two.
Also people's needs and perceptions vary a lot! For example there are threads advocating diluting your children's milk to make it go further (joke you not), and another one claiming that spending £1000 on a Miele washing machine is truly MS.0 -

LOL . .how ironic. Attacking me for being 'undiplomatic' by posting a high income, yet being unable to resist dropping in your wealthy background status.
Good for you patchwork cat.
I'm delighted for you that you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, bu sadly, that doesn't apply to all of us. Most of us have to work to make a living and fund our future.
Besides - to throw your original argument back at you - what is someone from a wealthy background doing on a moneysaving site ? :rotfl:0 -

.
I come from a single father family. We lived on a council estate in rural Norfolk and my dad worked as a labourer with a company resealing roads around the county, largely seasonal work 3-4 months a year.
The rest of the time he travelled around local villages on his bike (we had no car) earning a living painting and decorating other people's houses, and working as a handyman / gardener.
So - no - I don't come from a family already earning that much money, and I'm damned if I should be apologetic for doing so now.0 -
No merely pointing out that I am not motivated by jealousy as I have been accused, I have not detailed out any income past or present or my education, although I know what yours is!
No silver spoon we are not landed gentry!
I have already stated that I decided somethings were more important than money hence my maximising our income on MSE! My background doesn't enter into my current financial status, but it does affect your view on the world.0 -

Sure you do. But you don't know who i am. I am just an anonymous internet forum entity.
Tell me this - would it have been more polite to pretend to earn less, or should the entire thread be closed to me?0 -

Yes, i've noticed that a lot with your 'born into wealthy background' types. Money isn't important to you because you already have it and have never had to worry about it - your sort knows innately that their future is secured. Your wealth is based solely on your family's efforts, not your own. It's all so easy, isnt it?
And there you sit looking down your noses at people who become financially indedepent by their own efforts.0 -
This is fascinating - it breaks through the british resolve not to discuss money!
I am a fostering assessment social worker (in London) - £35k plus £2k retention bonus annually plus optional extras approx £4k (supervising social work students and out of hours duty). Benefits - flexitime and local gov pension.
Despite my salary sounding not too bad - it is still very very difficult for me and my partner (she earns similar) to upgrade to a house in this area from owning 2 flats. The ridiculousness of living near to the City and competing in effect with bankers and gangsters:D .
LOL - just seen all the recent postings and now understand why people don't discuss money as it causes friction!0
