You may think that queueing up with 25 other people, and having your boarding pass, bags and passport checked prior to boarding is a 'bag drop off point' but I think it is more similar to a check-in desk, albeit with one document printed off beforehand.

I can certainly agree with this.

I used Ryanair's bag drop over last weekend and apart from saving them the cost of 67 million-ish boarding cards over a year the bag drop is essentially the same as check-in. Bags must have tracking labels printed out and attached, the security questions must be asked and answered, overweight bags must be charged for and ID documents checked. Not much difference as far as I could see.

Air travel is getting less and less comfortable. OK, it is very cheap, but it is becoming slower and more distressing. Since we live on the south coast, we have recently taken a few holidays using the ferry to France and Germany. This works out more expensive because of the cost of fuel, but you can take almost as much luggage as you like in the car and you don't really have to queue.

Becky, did you consider simply driving to France?

What happens if you don't have bags to drop off? Do you go straight to boarding gate?

Yes, you head for the Boarding Gates with your hand luggage.

What I don't understand is why people continue to fly with Ryanair if they are really so rubbish?

Because many of us do not find Ryanair to be so rubbish :D
I have more than 60 flights with Ryanair over the last five years and still have to experience a single problem not solved in a good way by Ryanair. And on more than 10 of those my disabled daughter has also flown with wheelchair and good service from Ryanair...
