that is shocking! the same thing kind of happened to my husband but we got our money back thankfully. he had bought a £500 voucher on ebay, seller posted a piece of paper (special delivery) basically telling him where to go. police werent interested, luckily he had paid through paypal and although the money had been taken out of the sellers paypal account, paypal gave us the money back and chased the seller for it. that was a good couple years ago when paypal could be helpful though!
hope it gets sorted somehow :-)0 -
I would gather up a few burly family members and pay the "Seller" a visit for sure!0

I would:
1. Contact the police, and get a crime reference number (I think that's what it's called).
2. Cancel the cheque (it will cost you £20, I think); you can use the crime ref to validate your authenticity.
3. Decide whether it's worth pursuing the seller for the cheque cancellation fee or whether you'll take that on the chin.0 -
Bizarrely, you don't have to have a Law Degree to register here. Especially since it would be my first port of call when I need legal advice!
Jeez... it's an open forum, what do you want... Judge Judy??
Nobody said you had to have a legal degree to post here. But it helps if a little commonsense is exercised before parroting the inane.
The number of MSE posts over the years which state you can't do this or that because you were involved in "a civil dispute" is considerable, yet not a single such assertion has ever been qualified to read: but of course you can if involved in a military dispute, or an inter-galactic dispute, etc.
This has nowt to do with Judge Judy (thankfully) or even inadvertently voicing an opinion as fact but everything to do with engaging brain before using keyboard.0 -

You can't just cancel the cheque, it has now fully cleared against bouncing under the 2-4-6 rules.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. the police will do nothing and will only be any good for a c/ref number.
it is simple .there is no proof the parcel wasnt intercepted in the post, and the catalouge placed in parcel to make it still seem that goods were in there.simple.and thats it what they will say.littlewoods/littlewoods direct/marshall ward/kays/greatuniversal/empire stores/addittions/grattans/next/ambrose wilson.barclay card/cap1/bos/vanquis gold/vodafone/3 .dell finance/currys finance

Playing Devils advocate here
Sadly all the seller has to do is say he posted the laptop in good faith...and your brother now claims he didn't get it and is using the old "brick in a box" to claim he didn't get it....
who do you believe....
Caveat EmptorI'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0 -
Hence the report it to the police and get a crime ref.0
