    You dont need an i-phone.

You buy an O2 special i-phone sim off Flea-bay (£1.99 ish). Stick it in your dongle, buy a £10 top up from the corner shop and activate it by dialling their landline number 08456 062 277

    http://www.o2.co.uk/shop/paygotopup/topupvoucher

(or 4444 from any unlocked phone) and away you go. They send you texts but your dongle/netbook connection software will have SMS text viewing software.

Why can't you just use the same phone number to top up with a credit card?

Got everything working ok now. I put the sim in an ordinary unlocked phone and had about 6 messages from o2 to read and one of them included the settings. Thanks to every one who helped.
Still waiting for my £10 refund though.

So what are the correct settings?

After emailing them about no refund, i got this reply on the 5th June
Thanks for contacting us about the promotion you received.

Unfortunately, this was not applied as the discount was only for a first order, however as your first choice of order could not be supplied, I have manually applied the code today instead.
I am pleased to confirm that I have adjusted your account for you and you will see this £10 discount on your next card statement.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and look forward to you shopping online with us again soon.

You can use the O2 software but you will have to add settings for the new iphone sim you have got.

Click where you see the spanner and make a new entry to include

    Config Filename - O2
    Dial Number - *99#user
    User Name - Vertigo
    Password - password
    APN name - payandgo.o2.co.uk

When I try to change the settings in O2 connection manager and create a new config filename, there doesn't seem to be anywhere to add "dial number" option, only the username, password and APN name. Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

Sorry you don't need the dial number and you can call the config filename/profile name anything you like.
