Why can't we display beforehand? And what if my car is on a public road overnight? Must I stay awake till 23:59 then at the stroke of midnight (by Radio 4) switch the discs?? :rotfl:0 -

I have posted my old disk back to the DVLA to get 11/12's refund on it. I have checked with a Policeman that lives across the road from me and he says I do not have a problem sending off the old disk and displaying the new disk valid until 31/03/07 on my car. Its sat outside the house now with it on.
When I re taxed the car the post office computer stated that it was already taxed and when i explained what i was doing the guy behind the counter thought it was a good idea.
The DVLA know if your car is taxed, and as you only get a refund from the next month you are still having your car continually taxed.
Just buy the new one before you send of the old one and its not a problem.
Hope this helps

It certainly does thanks.
I really couldn't convince myself the advice given by AP was correct!

Just make sure you hear the pips on an analogue radio - they're delayed if you use digital :rotfl:0 -

Cheers :rotfl: I'll do that.
So for each of the 30 million cars in this country that are parked on the road overnight, you will find people skulking out just before midnight to replace the disc?? This is simply stupid.0 -

Unfortunately it can be a problem as I've just found out.
The PO clerk wouldn't let me tax it, checked with his boss and binned my form!
Having wasted considerable time queuing, I'm not going to waste money as well! This is a small way of getting something back from the Budget as I know it will relieve me of money in other ways!
Tried to tax it on the website and on their 0870 number but it would only let me start it from 1 March so AP is right.
Having jumped through enough hoops, I won't be beaten. I'll send the old disc off for a refund today and apply just after midnight online. I'll write "tax in post" in the licence holder like the old days!

I would still send it off from the P O and get a "proof of posting" card date stamped by them to prove you posted it before the 1st of the month.
"tax in post" in the licence holder? offence is "failing to display a current tax disc" and nothing to do with not having one or paying for one, you could even be booked for this if a current licence has fallen on the floor and cannot be seen from outside, a bit harsh but could happen.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

I have proof of posting for the previous licence so should be OK there.
Surely I have a legitimate excuse in that the PO wouldn't give me one so I have to wait for the post? Wouldn't a court view it as unreasonable for them to expect me to do the impossible? I have paid for continuous use but their rules force me to commit the offence of failing to display a current tax disc.
Bring back the old days when they trusted you and got ripped off!

As OH wasn't keen on driving without displaying a licence and was giving me earache, I decided to give it a go myself at a different PO.
I reprinted form V10 and queued for 25 mins on 1 April and plonked the documents in front of the clerk, expecting to have to get obstreperous.
To my amazement, he just said "has the car been off the road?" as he proceeded to fill in my new tax disc. I said I was surprised he asked that as there was actually an overlap until they get my refund application, for which I have proof of postage.
He just smiled and gave me my documents back with my new tax disc.
DW was happy but reckons women & foreigners get discriminated against, and as she is both and I am neither, the odds were in my favour.
A happy ending, nonetheless.

It's stupidity - to expect those who park cars on the road to be out at midnight at the end of the month to replace the disc :rotfl: This is what I got from DVLA:A tax disc cannot be displayed until the date of commencement. It is not valid until the date it starts.
Madness, absolute madness. If you forget to renew it, you get a £80 fine. If you don't replace the old tax disc at exactly midnight, you probably get some sort of penalty ticket. :mad:0
