this site is quite useful for newer cars - although the prices havent been updated yet, but it gives ideas on the banding.

  • My car tax has gone down from £75 to £40 and I only renewed it two months ago.

    A quick look at http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/Changes_to_cost_of_vehicle_tax.htm
shows I can send my old tax disc back for a refund and buy a new one. That gives me a saving of about £22.50. Something not to be sniffed at.

You will lose a month's worth if you do this - i.e. you only get a refund on your old tax disc from 1 April 2006 but you will have to start your new tax disc from 1 March 2006. This is just the same whenever you change your car.
  • God i dread to think what mine is. I have a 1999 Ford Puma 1.7 Just upgraded a tad from a 1.3 Ford Ka due to my partner needing a slight bigger engine for his long drives to Uni in September. Didn't wanna risk the KA on such a hard journey.
+ couldn't afford a newer car with a similar size engine.

    Surely this is wrong!
Why would you have to pay for the same month twice?

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Your car is pre 2001 so its under the old scheme higher bracket therefore £175.

I would suggest you go to the PO on March 31st,and fill in the form for a refund, get a "proof of posting" card date stamped by th PO,to prove you posted it on the last day of the month, then apply for you new disc to start on April 1st, therfore losing nothing on your surrendered disc as it will meet the criteria of posting by the last day of the month.

This just shows that car tax should be scrapped and put on fuel instead.

Someone doing low mileage in a high band car will be producing the same or less CO2 than someone in a lower band car doing higher miles.

The higher band resale values will now drop and the lower ones will rise meaning that the car can't be replace so they have no option but to keep it.

There is no upper, middle or lower class. Simply those that have class and those that don't. ;)
