It's a bit crap really though these new rules - what about all those cars exempt from VED because of their age? They'll be polluting more than any other car on the road.

You have to consider the environmental impact of scrapping the older car and building a new one.

I remember reading somewhere that a 25 year old car was very green because of those factors.

On a similiar vein, it's interesting to note that Honda and Toyota have both employed third parties to handle the disposal of the nickel from their "green" hybrid cars and refuse to answer any questions about the impact.

Another stealth tax, the labour cronies only talked about the 4x4 type vehicles and then hits just about everyone.

Another vote here for the road tax on fuel - the amount of emissions from any one vehicle have a much closer relation to the quantity of fuel it has consumed during the year, than to the arbitary system we have now. The avoidance of payment would also be a thing of the past, saving £££ in administration.

I noticed another anomaly on the DVLA site, bearing in mind that the tax is meant to broadly reflect pollution levels - A private light goods vehicle (upto 3.5 tonne) costs £175 to tax, but a private heavy goods vehicle (over 3.5 tonne) is £165. Where's the logic in that?

Your car is pre 2001 so its under the old scheme higher bracket therefore £175.

woa how depressing  I can't afford a newer car, + i like the Puma and it discontinued about 2001 I think.

I'm stunned - some articulated lorries up to 34 tonnes are cheaper to tax than a diesel car with a figure under 150g/km, as it's a few months too old for the cut-off date.

My Tax was reduced in the Budget to £50 from £85. As I taxed it from 01/03/06 last month, I went to the post office yesterday and purchased a New Disk from 01/04/06. I have posted my old disk back to the DVLA to get 11/12's refund on it. I have checked with a Policeman that lives across the road from me and he says I do not have a problem sending off the old disk and displaying the new disk valid until 31/03/07 on my car. Its sat outside the house now with it on.

When I re taxed the car the post office computer stated that it was already taxed and when i explained what i was doing the guy behind the counter thought it was a good idea.

The DVLA know if your car is taxed, and as you only get a refund from the next month you are still having your car continually taxed.

Just buy the new one before you send of the old one and its not a problem.

    Hope this helps

I must admit when i heard the budget I thought it was 4x4 for the school run which would be hit but after reading this forum I've just learnt I am £25 worse off.

I am only just in band F by 9CO2 and I drive less than 4000 miles per year. I therefore agree with scrapping the tax and putting it on fuel instead.

Strictly speaking you are breaking the law as the licence has not yet come into force, sorry your policeman that lives accross the road is wrong, nothing wrong with what you have done, but I would have waited until March 31st,and posted the "old" disc at the PO with a "proof of posting" card date stamped by the PO.

    The following is from HERE
Also note where they tell you the disc should be displayed!

When and where should I display the licence?

A licence comes into force on the day it is issued. But, if you apply for a licence in advance, it comes into force on the first day of the following month and you should not display it on your vehicle until then. You must display the disc on the near side (passenger side) of your vehicle’s windscreen. If the vehicle does not have a windscreen, the disc should be displayed on the near side of the vehicle.
Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition
