I tend to use vegetables, lentils and pulses the most - bulking but also healthy!0

Hi nickij,
I use seasonal vegetables (carrots, courgettes, leeks etc) to bulk out mince meals such as bolognese, lasagne, moussaka, cottage pie and shepherds pie. They're also good for savoury pastry pies, quiches and casseroles too.

Bulking out Meals?

I swear by using a couple of handfuls of red lentils to bulk out mince-based dishes (lasagne, spag bol etc). They cook down to a mush and are virtually undetectable but I think they give a nice subtle earthy flavour.
I also read a tip from MATH ages ago about bulking out mince with rolled oats. I often use a ratio of 25% oats to 75% mince and no-one has twigged yet.0 -
i also tend to use peppers and also sweetcorn and peas:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

Value mushrooms just over a £1 for a huge carton all shapes and sizes but who cares if they aren't the same shape. They can last 3 meals, also I cube potatoes into casseroles and curries etc.. to bulk them up (not if I'm weight watching tho!)LBM 17th April 2007:j

it depends on the time of year so at the moment we are using courgettes and peppers but in the autumn/winter it will be parsnips, carrots, swede etc.
I also find lentils to be a handy one.
If there is a small amount of stew/casserole after our meal, we will cook some lentils and add then to the meat/juice to create another meal from it.0
