  • Like many others, I put a handful of red lentils into mince-based sauces.

Grated carrots are really good, too. They add a little sweetness.

We also have lots of courgettes in the garden, so they're going into everything atm.

As with the rest... I make bolognese and chilli with half mince and half red lentils and shepherd's pie with brown lentils.

Flavoured soya from holland and barrett, have used it since it was mentioned on here for mince dishes. Carrots tend to be a common one I use.
One day I might be more organised...........

Chopped potatoes or pasta twists in soups and stews or butter beans/chick peas (my favourite pulses).
  • I like to use Chick peas. Some of the dishes I make can work out a little pricey if you don’t “cut” them with something. My sausage casserole can be double by the addition of the chickpeas as can lots of curries and pasta sauce dishes.

Quite cheap if bought tinned, VERY cheap if bought dried.

Tesco have bigish bags of frozen chick peas on offer at the mo I was told, friend of mine uses a lot of those. Never thought of adding them to casseroles etc myself, might have to try that.

bit of an oxymoron really however....

we have decided to concentrate all our efforts into paying our mortgage off so need to tighten the old belts a little

i am fairly good with cooking from scratch and budgeting but im at a bit of a loss with this one

my hub and myself eat a low carb diet similar to atkins but tweaked a bit so the traditional bulking items are unavailable to us - potatoes carrots pulses rice pasta etc

any one have any bright ideas ??

i have been and bought some dried soya mince to sprinkle in to help a bit but at 20g of carbs for 100g i cant be too free and easy with it

all ideas welcome !! does anyone else low carb whilst trying to OS ??

    hi there

    Have you tried:-

sweet potato? 1/2 a baked one is 13.8g carb....

cous cous 4oz cooked weight is 18.2g..

i dont know how many grammes you stick to.. Have you tried the low carb pasta? i believe its cross n blackwell or heinze... its in a light blue bag... my nephew body builds and he has that... if you have a "home bargains" near you, they usually have it in there cheaper...

Do you have the Atkins carb counter book? only im sat with it in front of me if you want anything looking up:D
